You are a member of the Church of Ilmater. Called the Ilmatari, those who serve Ilmater, the Crying God, are well known throughout Faerûn for their selflessness and nondiscriminatory healing practices. They are taught to alleviate suffering in all its forms and aid the oppressed, even at great personal cost. Suffering is considered holy, particularly suffering in the place of another.
The Ilmatari are renowned healers, both medical and magical. As such, you received training in the healing arts and are quite accustomed to dealing with disease and injury. Church dogma states that anybody who needs aid shall receive it, including (and perhaps especially) those considered "undesirable" by greater society, such as Tieflings and Goblins, so you have learned to communicate with such individuals in order to treat them.
Work with your Dungeon Master to determine what your life with the Church was like and where you stand now. Some questions to consider:
- How did you get involved with the Church? Were you abandoned at a monastery as an infant, or did you seek the path of Ilmater later in life?
- Did you come from a particular order? Where was your order's base of operations? A temple, a monastery, or someplace else? Were you in an area that welcomed your presence?
- Where did you fall in the Church hierarchy? What was your role? What were your duties?
- When did you decide to become a traveler, and why? Has your adventuring strengthened your faith, or are you turning away from Ilmater's path?
- Skill Proficiencies: Religion, Medicine
- Tool Proficiencies: Herbalism Kit
- Languages: Choose one from Abyssal, Draconic, Giant, Goblin, Infernal, Orc, or Undercommon
- Equipment: A set of common clothes, a herbalism kit, a healer's kit, an alms box, a holy symbol of Ilmater, and a pouch containing 5 gp
The good deeds of the Ilmatari have earned them -- and you, by association -- the respect of common folk across Faerûn. As a result of this reputation, you can secure accommodations, food, and other aid from commoners and others who support the Church of Ilmater by wearing or producing your holy symbol, unless you have given them a reason to distrust you. Aid may be given at no charge, at a discount, or in exchange for healing and/or counsel, at the discretion of the Dungeon Master. This feature applies to you alone; a Persuasion check may be required to extend this hospitality to your allies. Additionally, attacking a follower of Ilmater is generally seen as morally objectionable, so those who wish to remain in good social standing will be reluctant to fight you in view of civilians.
Suggested Characteristics
You were raised or initiated into a religion that prioritizes all others above the self, lives ascetically, and puts members in frequent contact with the poor, sick, and otherwise unfortunate. Whether you revere it or resent it, the Church has certainly shaped your experiences. Those drawn to Ilmater tend to be empathetic individuals who genuinely want to do good.
