You are a diplomat from a distant land, representing your nation to another. You might be a career politician, a negotiator sent out to discuss deals or agreements, a pilgrim hoping to meet and exchange goods and friendship with new lands, or a member of a royal family, sent to keep the peace in a rival's home.

Work with your DM to design your nation, its ruling class, its political structure, and the reason you were sent out. You do not act of your own accord—you speak for a family, a city, a providence, or even an entire nation, and you are tasked with the responsibility of representing not only their needs and desires, but their culture and nature as well. Not only do you need to determine how your home's government works, but you should also work with the DM to describe who rules that government and what their influence on you is.

Is your nation ruled by an old and established system, or was the current government only recently established? Is it a monarchy, a democracy, a feudal system, or a design few have ever heard of? How much influence does your nation wield, and over what area? What kind of reputation does not only your nation, but its current leaders have to other nations and peoples? How do the common people regard the leaders? Does this affect your reasoning for taking the position, or change the intent of your position?

What's your nation's position in the world? Geographically? Politically? Religiously? Economically? Culturally? What are their goals, both immediate and long-term? How do they feel about the other powers in the world? How does the nation you've been sent to feel about your home? Were you tasked with specific goals and intentions? Are they well-meaning and honest, or are they surreptitious, meant to undermined the other nations in the world? How do you, personally, feel about these goals, and do they differ from your public face?

Does your culture have a unique mode of dress? Are there insignias of your nation's leadership that you always keep on your person? Particular colors you wear all the time? An animal or plant or mystical creature regarded as a symbol of your nation or its power?

These details help establish your nation's government and your specific diplomatic role as features of the world of the campaign.

Skill Proficiencies: Insight, Persuasion
Tool Proficiencies: Calligrapher's Supplies
Languages: Two of your choice
Equipment: A set of fine clothes, calligrapher's supplies, a brooch, ring, or patch representing your nation, a Letter of Credence, and a purse containing 25 gp

Feature: Diplomatic Immunity

Your position as a representative of a foreign nation grants you some protection from repercussions and harm. In allied or friendly nations, you cannot be prosecuted for petty crimes or grievances, and representatives of that nation's leadership know you are not to be harmed or killed. This does not mean you cannot be targeted by the nation's denizens and citizens, or even by clandestine forces within the nation's government. Extreme crimes such as murder, espionage, or destruction of property may result in significant repercussions for you or your government, including expulsion or other aggression, and you may find even your own nation wishes to punish you for your slight. Tread lightly.

Suggested Characteristics

Diplomats are raised or trained to be insightful and quick-thinking, considering the implications of their words and actions before they happen. They are usually phenomenal public speakers, and are adept at respecting or utilizing traditions both familiar and foreign to further their goals, or the goals of their nation. Because of this, diplomats can be arrogant, used to a plush lifestyle, but they can also be cunning and surreptitious, open and honest, or anywhere in between.
