As someone chosen or created by a god for great and terrible things, you owe your existence to the divine. Whether formed from nothing as an infant by a god's word and thought, or chosen in the womb of your mother and blessed at birth, you came into this world with power, and that is how you will always move through it, whether by your own choices or the actions of others. You will never live a normal life. The gods have plans for you, though they may not choose to share them, and other mortals can see your potential with divine magic. Some may seek to take it for themselves, or destroy you for the threat you might someday become. Others may worship you or call on you for aide. Whatever path you take, your life will never be your own. Fate has a plan for you. It is only a question of whether or not you will survive.
Choose a god, or some other quasi-divine being, and work with your DM to detail the nature of your creation and decide what effect your existence will have on the campaign. If you were created for a specific purpose, has that purpose been made clear to you, or are you just as much in the dark as everyone else? Is your god in direct communication with you, or are they a distant presence, leaving you to interpret their will as best you can? Have you accepted your nature and your place in your deity's design, or will you try to throw off your destiny and carve your own path? Whatever your situation, decide on an origin story, and determine both allies and enemies. How do the established followers of your god fit into your life, and what enemies have you made simply by existing?
- Skill Proficiencies: Choose two from among Arcana, Persuasion, Religion, Insight, Medicine, History, or Survival
- Languages: Choose two from among Abyssal, Celestial, Deep Speech, Primordial, and Sylvan
- Equipment: A holy symbol, one trinket of special significance, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 15 gp
As a direct creation of the divine, you have an aura of power that others can sense. Your presence distorts the world around you in a way that is distinct and impossible to hide. Followers of the god who made you will recognize your nature and treat you with respect, though some may do so out of fear rather than reverence. You and your adventuring companions can expect to receive free healing and care at a temple, shrine, or other established presence of your faith, though you must provide any material components needed for spells.
Regular people may not be able to tell exactly what you are, but they know a possible threat when they see one. As long as your attitude towards others is respectful and reasonable, no one will pick a fight with you. Still, you are an outsider, always held apart. Even those who view your power in a positive light will regard you as something Other. In addition, enemies of your creator will seek to harm you wherever you go. This has made you adept at finding places to hide. You will always be able to sequester yourself and your party in uncommon or out of the way lodgings at no cost, whether that be the maintenance area of a sewer system, a convenient outcropping of rocks in the middle of the wilderness, or the basement of an abandoned warehouse. These lodgings will be dry, hidden, and moderately comfortable, though always cramped and (if in urban areas) unconventional.
Suggested Characteristics
Your life has been shaped by the god who made you and the people who know of your power, whether they meant you good or ill. Maybe you were raised in the cloistered comfort of a temple, kept away from the prying eyes and greedy hands of those who would seek to exploit you. You might have spent your life on the run, dodging organizations or individuals who intended to harm you, perhaps endangering innocents along the way. Or you could have become a figurehead, drawing flocks of worshippers and shaping the fates of others while your god watches from on high.
| d8 | Personality Trait |
|---|---|
| 1 | I’ve spent so long in the temple or in hiding that I have little experience dealing with the outside world. |
| 2 | I am tolerant (or intolerant) of other faiths and respect (or condemn) the worship of other gods. |
| 3 | The burden of my creation weighs heavy on my shoulders, and I think often of how it might feel to be ordinary. |
| 4 | I see omens in every event and action. The gods try to speak to us, we just need to listen. |
| 5 | When people ask for my judgment or advice I feel compelled to give an answer, even when I cannot guarantee its merit. |
| 6 | I find speaking to my god easier than trying to converse with other people, even when my prayers go unanswered. |
| 7 | I keep my emotions carefully hidden and controlled. An emotion others can see is a weakness they can exploit, and I cannot allow myself to be exploited. |
| 8 | I am embarrassed by the attention my status brings me. I wish to be seen as a person, not merely the tool of a higher power. |
| d6 | Ideal |
|---|---|
| 1 | Aspiration. I am confident (or doubtful) that I am worthy of my god’s favor, and I always seek to improve, matching my actions against their teachings. (Lawful) |
| 2 | Faith. I believe initiative is needed to bring about change in the world, and I must hope that my god trusts the choices I make in order to do so. (Any) |
| 3 | Selflessness. My gifts are meant to be shared with all, not used for my own benefit. (Good) |
| 4 | Freedom. I have no knowledge of the official teachings of my divine patron, and I chafe under the limitations that others wish to impose on me. (Chaotic) |
| 5 | Determination. I've been given power, and ultimately it falls to me to decide how to use it. (Any) |
| 6 | Endurance. I can't change what I am, and I can't change how others see me, but I will always fight to keep some modicum of control over my own life. (Neutral) |
| d6 | Bond |
|---|---|
| 1 | Certain followers of my god's order are the only family I have ever known, and I would do anything to protect them. |
| 2 | Because I was imbued with divine potential at birth, my sense of self is tied to how well I live up to my god's expectations. |
| 3 | All those who ever tried to help me suffered for it. If anyone else gets hurt on my behalf, I might drown in the guilt. |
| 4 | There are people hunting me, and I will go to any lengths to remain free. |
| 5 | My community relies on me for protection/aide/guidance. They would be lost without me, and I could never abandon them. |
| 6 | I have never had a single place to call home, and for me safety is nothing but a distant memory. |
| d6 | Flaw |
|---|---|
| 1 | I take advantage of the faith people place in me, using my position as a chosen one to further my own goals. |
| 2 | I hold myself to impossible standards, and have put myself and others in harms way trying to prove my worth. |
| 3 | I place too much trust in those who wield power within my temple’s hierarchy, and I'm at risk of falling pray to their machinations. |
| 4 | I am suspicious of strangers and expect the worst of them. |
| 5 | I use my power recklessly and without thought for potential consequences. |
| 6 | If you break my trust even a single time, you will never be forgiven. |
