Forest Sage Image

You have lived your entire life deep in the forests of the land. Being raised in this way has taught you much about the plants, animals, and wild magic present in these areas, as well as the skills needed to survive living on your own in the wild. With your life having been spent deep in the wild, you have not spent much time around other people so your knowledge and experience around dealing with other people and navigating the outside world is very limited. This means that social situations can be somewhat awkward and difficult and your bonds and friendships are limited. You may need to rely on the knowledge of others to navigate easily in the outside world, but you can always test your own skills by trying to make it on your own. As a forest sage, you need to ask yourself the question - how far would you go and how many challenges would you face for the sake of protecting your land?

Skill Proficiencies: Two of Nature, Animal Handling, Arcana, and Survival based on variant choices.
Tool Proficiencies: Two of Cook's Utensils, Leatherworker's Tools, Woodcarver's Tools, Herbalism Kit.
Equipment: Two sets of artisan's tools, a forest survival kit, a pouch containing 5 gp, and a memento from your childhood.

Feature: Keeper of the Land

You have spent your entire life surrounded by and caring for the plants and animals that inhabit this land. You don't need to roll checks for plants and animals native to your area unless there is something unusual about them. Your experience with these topics means that even if you don't know exactly what is going on, you can usually infer at least basic information such as similarities to other plants or animals you do know about. In addition, you are able to be fully self-sufficient due to your upbringing and don't incur any lifestyle expenses for as long as you continue to live outside of settled areas. Living in the wild poses no challenge for you, and finding food, shelter, and water are second nature. Choose Nature and Animal Handling as your proficiencies.

On the other hand, if you do choose to live within a settled area, your discomfort and inexperience with living in general society mean that your lifestyle expenses will be higher than average due to a combination of factors, potentially including discomfort in social situations leading to you being uncomfortable haggling, not having an understanding of what things such as food would generally cost, and being more susceptible to being fooled by scams. Discuss an appropriate increase in living expenses with your DM to suit the setting and character.

Suggested Characteristics

Forest Sages are most at home in the forests and wild places, and therefore usually struggle when dropped into civilization, especially bigger towns and cities. They can be very awkward in conversation, as the most experience they have with dealing with others is with the family they grew up with and the occasional trader when they needed to barter for goods they couldn't find and/or create themselves. Most Forest Sages have no or very few bonds to others, but they always have deep ties to the lands they inhabit. Anxiety around social situations and a lack of knowledge about civilization are challenges often faced by those with this background.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I will always prefer the path that avoids social situations and civilization.
2 I prefer the company of animals over humanoid creatures.
3 I respect the wild far more than I could respect any person.
4 I enjoy the challenges presented by living in and navigating the wild.
5 I am most used to communicating with creatures unable to understand complicated ideas so I am capable of explaining concepts in a simple way - sometimes to the point where I sound condescending.
6 I doubt that others know as much about the wilds as me, and I will ignore anyone who tries to contradict me in such matters.
7 I am horribly, horribly awkward in social situations.
8 I have faced the harshest challenges that the land has presented, and come out all the stronger for it.
d6 Ideal
1 Equality. The land gives everyone the same chance in both challenge and reward - I see no reason to behave otherwise. (Neutral)
2 Kindness. The land will always provide for those who care for it, and people should behave the same. (Good)
3 Order. Each person plays their own part in the cycle of life, and we should stick to that role. (Lawful)
4 Freedom. In the wild, we are free to choose our own path, no laws created by man can govern the wild. (Chaotic)
5 Survival. Only those willing to use anything and anyone at their disposal can survive in the wild. (Evil)
6 Change. The land is always changing, and life is easier if you can change with it. (Any)
d6 Bond
1 I chose to protect this land, and I will not abandon it.
2 I have lived in this land for my entire life - the animals here are my family and friends.
3 I have nurtured these plant for many cycles of seed to bloom, they are like my own children.
4 There is an animal I raised myself after it was abandoned, they will follow me everywhere I go.
5 I promised someone I care about that I will protect this land.
6 Someone saved my life when I was abandoned in this forest as a child - I will do whatever I can to repay them.
d6 Flaw
1 If I deem it necessary, I will abandon and betray my companions in favour of protecting the land.
2 I don't know how to let someone in - I can't create bonds strong enough to ever trust someone fully.
3 I have no clue how to navigate civilization or use the resources it provides, I will never look there for ways to solve a problem.
4 I can't understand nuance in conversation - sarcasm, rhetorical questions, and implied messages go right over my head, occasionally causing problematic situations.
5 I am always blunt and honest, often to the point where I accidentally insult people.
6 Social situations scare me, I completely shut down as soon as a conversation gets difficult.

Variant Forest Sage: Wild Sage

You have spent the majority of your life living in the wild, contending with the dangers that an excess of wild magic can pose when left to its own devices. You do your best to guide the flow of magic to work in less destructive ways to minimize the risk out-of-control magic can present to those living in and around these natural wells of power. Perhaps you have been facing off against normally mundane plants and animals super-charged with arcane forces, or strange magical effects coming seemingly out of nowhere. Maybe the magic around you is more benign and was able to be channeled into more productive tasks, such as increasing the production of resources in the area, or the health of local plants and animals. Either way, this experience has given you a wealth of experience in dealing with arcane forces and surviving and thriving in challenging situations. For this variant, select the Guardian of the Wild feature.

Variant Feature: Guardian of the Wild

With the understanding of arcane forces you have gained over your life, you are able to intuitively have a grasp on the effects of wild magic, allowing you to sense the presence and class (but not the specific effect) of magic around you, not counting magic items. In addition, you are able to be fully self-sufficient due to your upbringing and don't incur any lifestyle expenses for as long as you continue to live outside of settled areas. Living in the wild poses no challenge for you, and finding food, shelter, and water are second nature. Choose Arcana and Survival as your proficiencies.
