A Wayfarer could often be described in a similar way to a wanderer, if not for the key distinction of the wayfarer selling their skills on their travels. Whether that be weaving, art, combat, music, or scribing, the wayfarer travels to see the world, and their skills lead their way. Most Wayfarers are adept in at least one form of combat, having to shield themselves from roving bands of highwaymen, or their sword may be their way of making their money. As a Wanderer, you have the skills needed to make a living off of the land you travel, and to make what gold pieces you earn last you until you can earn more.
- Skill Proficiencies: The Wayfarer is a survivalist, first and foremost. Therefore, they have proficiency with the survival skill. Additionally, due to the wide range of wayfarers that journey across the world, there is no other set skill they are all good at, meaning proficiency with one other skill of your choice.
- Tool Proficiencies: The Wayfarer lifestyle lends itself to being very versatile, so you can choose one of the following tool proficiencies.
- Languages: The Wayfarers are a versatile folk, meaning they have to be able to converse with the people they come across in their travels. You gain proficiency with any other language that you don't already speak.
- Equipment: Wayfarers start with the equipment needed to survive on long journeys through potentially unsafe areas. A weapon, an explorer's pack, and a set of cold weather clothes.
During the years of travel they have done on foot, the Wayfarer has met thousands of people from many of the different races across the world. As such, they have the unique ability to make themselves understood to somebody who otherwise wouldn't be able to communicate with them. They cannot speak with them other than in fragments of known words, and more complicated ideas cannot be expressed this way, but for simple transactional conversation, wayfarers can manage with just about anyone.
Suggested Characteristics
Wayfarers can be cagey and hard to pin down, due to their love of travel and exploration, so they may at first be evasive if they are asked to create long-term plans. Slow to trust, but quick to haggle, you might decide your wayfarer is the performative type, setting up in new towns with an apprentice, putting on a show. Or they may be more similar to a hired sword, reaching a town and delving into its underworld, in search of illicit jobs.
