You led a simple life as an apothecary; brewing potions and poisons, growing herbs and helping folks in need through your knowledge. However, you’ve grown restless and have now left that life behind you in the search for adventure. Perhaps you left to broaden your horizons, to learn more about the medicinal practices around the world, or to catalogue and harvest an exceptionally rare herb. Whatever the case is, your knowledge of herbs, medicines and poisons will no doubt be a great asset in your new and adventurous life.

Suggested Characteristics

Apothecaries have qualities similar to doctors and other medical professionals, wishing to help and heal the sick and injured. However, they also differ greatly in their understanding and love of the natural world.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I never leave home without a bag of useful herbs and concoctions.
2 I care more about aiding animals than people.
3 I know a poison for every situation.
4 Like nightshade, I am deceptively innocent and sweet, but wrong me and you will suffer.
5 Plants don't talk much, and neither do I.
6 I wish I was gardening...
7 I'm sort of like a potato. Bland and not the prettiest around, but also robust and adaptable, and most people love me more than they care to admit.
8 I secretly hate my line of work, but it's the only thing I’m good at that puts food on the table.
d6 Ideal
1 Nature. Everyday, people steal from nature. One day, we will have to return what we have taken. (Neutral)
2 Greed. I’ll brew whatever gets me paid. (Evil)
3 Community. I dream of opening a large center where I can treat the sick and injured on a mass scale. (Good)
4 Experiment. Who cares about traditional methods; improvisation and experimentation will lead me to new discoveries. (Chaotic)
5 Tradition. My family has always brewed potions to heal the wounded. (Any)
6 Patience. To ensure a proper yield of herbs, one must resist the desire to harvest at first signs of growth. People are much the same. (Lawful)
d6 Bond
1 I wish to prove that “mundane” healing is just as viable as magic.
2 Nature is beautiful, and I hope I can learn more about it during my travels.
3 I lost a loved one to a deadly poison. I’ve since learned the cure to make sure it never happens again.
4 I was kidnapped by a crime syndicate and am now bound to their service.
5 I know the secret ingredient required to brew a powerful potion, and I will guard this secret with my life.
6 I am forever in debt to the person who trained me to be an apothecary.
d6 Flaw
1 I’ll kill to learn the secrets of other apothecaries.
2 I’m prideful to a fault, and will never admit when I’m wrong.
3 I am a true perfectionist, and have no qualms throwing away perfectly good medicine if there’s even the slightest issue with them.
4 I enjoy testing out newly brewed poisons on others.
5 If a plant could be useful, I will always take it with me, no matter how foul it smells.
6 I grow angry if people step on strange or useful plants.
