You are mostly known for delivering packages and messages between people or kingdoms. While you may bring a message of war or a declaration of peace, you don't typically care about the package. You have no one home, you are essentially a wanderer doing your job.
- Skill Proficiencies: You have met plenty of suspicious faces, so you're proficient in Investigation when it comes to dialogue. A couple times you may have gotten lost in the jungles so you have learned key Survival skills. You're always trying to find the best paying jobs so you are a natural when it comes to Perception, Deception, and Persuasion.
- Tool Proficiencies: You are proficient in Thievery and Dungeoneer tool kits.
- Languages: Knows common and 2 other languages.
- Equipment: Starts out with a simple Longsword and leather armor and 20 misc items.
When talking with an NPC, you can use this feature to automatically know if the person is lying or telling the truth. While talking to an NPC offering money for services, you can use this to automatically raise the amount of money you and your party get. When talking to an NPC, you can use this ability to use your Charisma to automatically get the NPC to get whatever you want from them (Doesn't allow you to get any of their possessions, instead to convince them of anything you want, to get them to give you more info on something or more personal stuff, I'm not judging). The last thing you can do with this ability is you can give +2 Charisma to another player for 1 day.
Suggested Characteristics
Prime Requisite - Charisma
Secondary - Dexterity, Wisdom, and Intelligence

Posted May 9, 2019Isn't this background a bit overpowered in a RP sense? At the most I would have players roll at advantage, rather than have them automatically pass a check at an infinite amount of time.

Posted Feb 27, 2021As do I. It would work well in an encounter I'm thinking of doing in my campaign.

Posted May 2, 2021This is massively overpowered - you get Investigation, Survival PLUS Perception AND Deception AND Persuasion - as in 5 different skills? Also I don’t think there is such a thing as Dungeoneer’s Toolkit in 5e - perhaps you meant the Dungeoneer’s Pack? Nothing in it requires a proficiency to use though. The equipment also looks too generous - on average a background grants you a couple of items, perhaps a toolkit and a small amount of gold. The feature is an interesting concept but it’s also crazily overpowered - there’s a whole skill dedicated to telling whether someone is lying to you, an ability to do it automatically is a huge advantage, same with the other uses of this ability - I would at least limit the number of uses per day, the way its written now it easily beats any of the other backgrounds. This is a nice concept though, just needs some balancing in my opinion.

Posted Mar 8, 2024This background is SUPER powerful, mostly because it gives you the ability to grant another player a +2 Charisma bonus for a whole day! Use this feature, call an end to the session, then hit the clubs all night babey!
