Your knowledge and experience with creatures is extensive allowing you to identify many animals and monsters you encounter and swiftly determine the general nature of new specimens. When you attempt to learn or recall a piece of information regarding a creature, if you do not know that information, you often know where and from whom you can obtain it. Usually, this information comes from a library, scriptorium, university, or a researcher or other learned person. Your DM might rule that the knowledge you seek is secreted away in an almost inaccessible place, or that it simply cannot be found.

Suggested Characteristics

Mythobiologists are defined by their extensive studies, and their characteristics reflect this life of study in the field. Devoted to the natural world, a mythobiologist values creatures highly—sometimes for purely academic reasons, others for questionable research purposes.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I understand that not everyone knows nature like I do and I don’t mind enlightening them when they are wrong.
2 I’ve read every book on monsters—or I like to boast that I have.
3 I’m happy to explain to someone any and everything I know about a creature…everything.
4 I have a way with beasts of any kind, they seem to often trust me.
5 I like to collect small specimens and samples of various critters if I can fit them in my bag.
6 I much prefer the company of animals to people, and as such I’m a bit awkward around others.
7 I name and attempt to pet nearly every new creature I meet.
8 I enjoy reading extensively on my favorite flora and fauna, and those local to the region.
d6 Ideal
1 Curiosity. A hunger for knowledge is what drives life. (Neutral)
2 Docile. Every living thing is beautiful and deserves care. (Good)
3 Order. Ecosystems are like a delicate clock and should be treated as such. (Lawful)
4 Superiority. Nature is a hierarchy of predators and prey; learn your prey to be the predator. (Evil)
5 Wild. Creatures are meant to be free and wild, follow your instincts. (Chaotic)
6 Growth. To know the things that grow is to grow what one knows. (Any)
d6 Bond
1 It is my duty to protect the creatures of my world.
2 I have knowledge on an extraordinary creature that must not be learned by the wrong people.
3 I work to preserve a library, university, scriptorium, or conservatory.
4 My life’s work is a series of tomes related to a specific creature.
5 I’ve been searching my whole life for a certain rare animal.
6 I am the caretaker of the last living member of a nearly extinct species.
d6 Flaw
1 I am easily distracted by the promise of a new creature.
2 Most people scream and run when they see a dangerous monster. I stop and take notes on its anatomy.
3 Protecting an animal is worth the price of a civilization.
4 I always put my studies first, even at the expense of others or my own well-being and hygiene.
5 I speak without really thinking through my words, invariably insulting or confusing others.
6 I am prone to tampering with things I probably shouldn’t if it means potential knowledge or even profit.
