Before you became an adventurer, your life was dedicated to the idea that the ends justify the means.  Sometimes the only way to fight evil was with evil.  You allowed your hands to get bloody in secret so clerics, acolytes, and worshipers could keep their hands clean. Risking your eternal soul you moved in the shadows and may even be part of the criminal subculture.

You might be a cunning half-thief, prowling the rooftops to plant evidence or eavesdrop in order to blackmail enemies of the church. Perhaps you are someone who has your ear to the street, aware of the doings of thieves’ guilds and street gangs. Eventually your list of foes outgrew your abilities.  

As a member of an adventuring party, you can grow in power and continue to fight fire with fire.

For instance, your bond might involve other sin-eaters or the enforcers in good aligned organizations. Your ideal could be associated with your determination always punish corruption or your desire to maintain the reputation of your deity.
