You have wanted to be a soldier for as long as you can remember. As a youth, you transformed every mundane chore into an imaginary battle of good versus evil; each scene set to the hearthside tales of chivalry and righteous battles that you could never hear enough of. Whether you were trained with the local militia, conscripted into an army , or answered a call to arms - when sword and spear were thrust into your hands, you took them proudly and with purpose, eager to join the cause.
Only, your experiences as a soldier were nothing like the old stories. You did not meet foes on the open field amongst banners and war horns in the splendor of battle. Instead, you foraged for supplies, often at the expense of travelers and villages. You guarded captives who were often tortured or executed for the remaining faithful to their cause, or had no value as prisoners. Rather than driving evil men and monstrous races from your homeland in defeat, you had instead become an aggressor in a foreign land, where you drove the smallfolk from their villages and farmsteads in terror.
You have witnessed wonton killing, cruelty, and plunder. You have marched with soldiers who more closely resembled the monsters in the tales you once so cherished, and you have shared your cookfires with many more who have responded to atorocities with callous indifference.
As you bore witness to events which dishonored your core beliefs and tore at your conscience, you came to the conclusion that the penaly for desertion was preferable to the harm you have either directly or indirectly been a party to.
When you choose this background, work with your DM to determine which military organization you were a part of and what kind of experiences drove you to desert your company.
- Skill Proficiencies: Athletics and History
- Tool Proficiencies: Weaver's tools or Woodcarver's tools
- Equipment: Knife and whetstone, an ironic token of your military service (such as a shred of your sovereign's banner to be used as a handkerchief), a set of commoner's clothes, and a pouch containing 5 gp
So long as it is not known that you are a deserter, you have have the ability to use your military rank from your career as a soldier. Soldiers loyal to your former military organization still recognize your authority and influence, and they defer to you if they are of a lower rank. You can invoke your rank to exert influence over other soldiers and requisition simple equipment or horses for temporary use. You can also usually gain access to friendly military encampments and fortresses where your rank is recognized.
