You grew up in an environment that you realized had hardships that required someone to step up and take care of others. You might have been the person taking care of children, mending wounds, or maybe even the one that any person could go to to talk about their issues.

When you pick this background, work with your DM to figure out what role you had before you began your life as an adventurer. Some examples may include, bandaging wounds, being a therapist, working in an orphanage, etc.

 
Skill Proficiencies: You gain proficiency two skills of your choice from Insight, Medicine, or Survival
Tool Proficiencies: You gain proficiency with either one set of Artisans tools, or with a Herbalism kit
Languages: You gain one language of your choice based on the people that you cared for.
Equipment: A tool set used to assist people, a trinket given to you by someone you cared for, an old set of clothing that holds too many memories to get rid of, and a pouch containing 10gp.

You have a knack for finding where injured/sick/unstable people are and can usually assist in some way. When you do, those around you may offer accommodations, and even lend you a favor depending on how much you helped.
