Fighting for coin and glory, you are experienced in the ways of battle and reap its benefits while never being tied down by having to declare your loyalty to one of the many warring nations that pay you. Any home will be second to the battlefield in your heart, and you are free to move and serve who you please. You may be famous or infamous, be part of a mercenary group, or a lone wolf, but you are always willing to fight - for the right price. Whether it be for gold, glory, peace, or war, you are never far away from the battlefield, and you always keep your weapons sharp.
- Skill Proficiencies: Working a wide variety of jobs has required you to become creative. You have 2 skill proficiencies.
- Tool Proficiencies: Employers give you money, they don't tell you how to fix your weapons. You have one tool proficiency.
- Languages: You have both fought and worked for a wide variety of nations, races, and peoples. You have 1 language choice.
- Equipment: A mercenary has to be flexible and resilient, and must be one with their equipment. You receive one weapon and one set of armor.
There are many different types of mercenaries - jack-of-all-trades, assassins, kidnappers, bounty hunters, charlatans, cat burglars, those who fight for themselves and their own, and even those who fight only for what they think is true. Mercenary groups tend to be known with how they deal with their targets, and whether or not they fight in, for, or against the law.
On or between missions, you generally have a good eye for what is valuable and what isn't, whether it be the integrity of gold in a treasure horde or the quality of fabric on a visiting noble. You can usually tell if the person you're being paid to kill will pay you more to save their life than your employer is to take it.
Suggested Characteristics
Mercenaries can walk many paths, ranging from fighting for just and noble causes to whoever pays the most. The extent different mercenary groups are willing to go to to finish the mission varies widely, as do the people within those groups. You could be altruistic and fair, thoughtfully considering the outcome of the job before you take it, or you could be apathetic and cruel, not caring what gets in your way as long as there's coin in it for you in the end.
