Freeman Image

Whether born into it or captured at a very young age, you have spent most of your early life in chains, serving under the boot of your captors as a slave.  Pain, loss, and soul-crushing agony have been your constant companions, and yet you toiled on, surviving as others around you fell to the harsh conditions.  Whether you managed to sneak away, fought and killed your captors, or were rescued by the kindness of strangers, you now have your freedom.  Though the scars of your past may haunt you, you are now free to pursue your own destiny and seize your own future.

Emancipation Method

Many Freeman earn their freedom in different ways, sometimes through murderous means, through the kindness of others, or through sheer luck.  Choose the way you managed to gain your freedom.

d8 Emancipation Method
1 Nothing felt better than the day you plunged your makeshift blade into your master's heart
2 You completed an important task for your master, and were rewarded with your freedom
3 Your master lost you in a high stakes game of chance, and the wily grifter that played them for a fool set you free
4 Your poor master suffered from some terrible affliction and passed away. Of course you had *nothing* to do with it...
5 A group of adventurers fought through your master's minions and either slew them or forced them to free their captives
6 You worked the grounds, so you knew them better than anyone. You finally gained the courage to slip out unnoticed and make your way to freedom
7 Your master pushed you too far and you snapped. No one survived your rampage, especially not them
8 Your master was made to see the error of their ways and let you go, begging for forgiveness

Feature: Endure Hardship

Using the techniques you used to survive through your captivity, you can steel yourself to fight through the toughest of conditions you face on your journeys.  When you have at least one level of fatigue, you can ignore the effect of the highest level of fatigue that you have for one hour.  For example, if you have 3 levels of fatigue, for an hour you can choose not to gain disadvantage on attack rolls and saves, however you would still have your speed halved and have disadvantage on ability checks from the previous levels of fatigue.  This ability cannot stop your character's death if you reach 6 levels of fatigue.  You can only do this once in a day, and you must take a long rest before you can do so again.

Suggested Characteristics

Many freeman characters feel empowered by their newfound freedom, and are ready to strike out and make something of themselves, regardless of risk.  Others may be ruled by fear of being returned to the captivity they escaped, and seek power in order to protect themselves.  Still others' minds were broken by the daily abuse and can be selfish, violent, or manifest any number of strange quirks.
