Located halfway between Neverwinter and Waterdeep in the foothills of the Sword Mountains, Hemphill is a pipeweed farm owned and operated by the Hemphill clan of halflings. The Hemphills are a very wealthy family and they have many people of all races who work for them. The farm grows hemp primarily, but they also grow maple trees to produce syrup, fairy pumpkins, cherry blossoms, Poppy, and Lilly pads. They are primarily farmers, but they finance adventurers who are out trying to do good as well as fortune/treasure hunters for a percentage of the profits. On the farm are three smaller villages, the main house and surrounding out buildings, several wind mills, a mine, and the original family home which is believed to be haunted so no one lives in it anymore.
Horatio “Kettlehead” Hemphill-patriarch and current boss of the farm, Horatio Hemphill is a pretty famous person. He adventured in his youth (where he earned the name “Kettlehead” from his elven friend and partner, Gareth Greenlaw, when he literally used a pot as a helmet when they were attacked by trolls) and only retired to farm life once his equally famous father, Heronford Hemphill passed away. A portly halfling who wears a waistcoat with a gold pocketwatch and chain, several rings and necklaces, and smokes a long churchwarden pipe. He has bushy sideburns and big blue eyes that make him look very kind. He can most often be found on the porch, with his vicar’s hat pulled down over his eyes, fast asleep.
- Skill Proficiencies: from listening to old man Hemphill's stories you have become well versed in the history of Faerun. Being on the farm has given you familiarity with Nature as well as Animal Handling.
- Tool Proficiencies: Being around and helping on a large farm you have learned to fix things and improvise. You are proficient in the use of Tinker's Tools, Carpenter's tools, or Smith's tools.
- Languages: All Hemphill associates are fluent in halfling and one other language of your choice.
- Equipment: All Associates get a set of tinker's tools, Smith's tools, or Carpenters tools, a Hemphill signet ring, and a leather pouch containing 20 gold.
Horatio Hemphill is a very famous Halfling. In any Halfling settlement or home you will be welcome and sheltered. Aside from Halflings, in most populated areas or farming communities there will be someone who celebrates the hero who will arrange room and board for your party. You are aware of many associates of the old hero and can contact them when needed.
Suggested Characteristics
Nearly all associates of the Hemphills are of good alignment and enjoy life. Peoples of all races have lived with and worked for the Hemphills for hundreds of years now, Not just since Horatio took the helm.
