At some point in your life, something strange happened. Something that would forever change you.
Did you delve into a dangerous ruin and find an ancient and magical artefact that contained the soul of a long-lost sorcerer? Was a barbarian of lore bound to a weapon that you recovered from their tomb? Were you killed as part of some foul ritual that bound your soul eternally in undeath to a powerful being? Or perhaps you formed a pact with a demon, and as part of the deal, they, or one of their minions, now share your body.
Whatever the case may be, your mind is now filled with the knowledge and personality of an entire other being. How much this affects you is your choice, and the level of control they may assert depends on your strength of character.
One thing is for sure- unless you find some way to break this bond, you are bound now and forever to a shared fate.
- Skill Proficiencies: Choose two from among Arcana, Investigation, Religion, or Survival
- Tool Proficiencies: Choose one Artisan's Tool that either your Fatebound used in their previous life, or that you are proficient with.
- Languages: Choose one exotic language that the other person/creature inhabiting your mind knew (Abyssal, Celestial, Deep Speech, Draconic, Infernal, Primordial, Sylvan, or Undercommon)
- Equipment: A monster hunter’s pack, a set of common clothes, and one trinket of special significance (choose one or roll on the Gothic Trinkets table after this background).
Prior to becoming an adventurer, your path in life was defined by one dark moment, one fateful decision, or one tragedy. Now you feel an inexplicable bond, an otherworldly presence threatening to consume you, and you fear there may be no hope of escape. Choose a bonding event that haunts you, or roll one on the Bonding Events table.
| d6 | Bonding Event |
|---|---|
| 1 | As a monster slaughtered dozens of innocents it would have taken your life too, but some force overtook your body at the last moment, saving you, and has remained with you since. |
| 2 | You were born under a dark star. You can feel it watching you, coldly and distantly. This star has bound you to another for some reason neither of you can explain. |
| 3 | An apparition that has haunted your family for generations now haunts you. You don’t know what it wants, and it won’t leave you alone. |
| 4 | Your family has a history of practicing the dark arts. You dabbled once and now your soul has bonded with someone- or something- else. |
| 5 | A monster took your sibling one cold, dark night, and you were unable to stop it. Some magic has brought their soul back, binding you together. |
| 6 | You were cursed to have your soul bonded to another, or to share your body with something else. |
You are able to call upon the shared knowledge of you and your Fatebound to recall facts with greater accuracy and ease. Consider the knowledge you may gain from sharing your body and mind with another. If your Fatebound was a dragon, then perhaps you are now knowledgeable in the behaviour and distinction of the various types of dragon. If they were an astute scholar, perhaps you simply have a much greater ability to recall information you've learned, or perhaps your Fatebound is very knowledgeable on a specific subject.
Whilst this feature grants you access to a shared knowledge bank, it is up to your DM to determine whether the outcome of this is advantage on related checks, or simply an easier DC. Perhaps this feature grows stronger as you do, and your bond deepens.
Suggested Characteristics
You have learned to live with the being that shares your body. You are a survivor, who can be very protective of those who bring light into your darkened life.
Consider choosing more than one characteristic in each category to represent the characteristics of the spirit/soul to which you have become Fatebound.. Which personality is more dominant in which category? How does your bond interact with your Fatebound's flaw?
