You grew up wanting to be an herbalist. Grinding plants and minerals to turn into potions and poultices by hand had always been a fascination. Somewhere along the line, you found yourself studying under a master herbalist who had some interesting customers. These customers would ask for specialty potions and vials that often came with a high cost. When you discovered what they were, you were overcome by intrigue and demanded to learn more.
Over the years, you learned not only how to make potions that would heal and cure nasty poisons, but how to make the nasty poisons as well.
- Skill Proficiencies: Medicine is granted automatically. Additionally, you may choose 1 proficiency from Nature or Survival.
If you already are proficient in Nature or Survival from your race or class, you may instead choose one of the listed proficient skills to gain expertise in.
- Tool Proficiencies: Herbalism Kit, Poisoner's Kit
- Equipment: Your standard class starter equipment (no buy option), Herbalism Kit, Poisoner's Kit, 2 small poison vials (capable of holding 3 doses of poison each), a set of 2 treated pouches and sash (functions as a belt with hidden pouch) that prevent smells and liquids from escaping, and a pouch containing 2gp. (Poison equipment is expensive!)
You have been so obsessed with making poisons that you hardly bothered to pay attention when studying the creation of healing potions. As such, when you make poisons using your Poisoner's Kit, you will be able to do so with advantage. Likewise, you will also have advantage when using your Herbalism Kit to make antidotes to poisons you are familiar with.
When crafting Potions of Healing, roll a d20 and add your Herbalism Kit proficiency. You will succeed regardless of what you roll when crafting these potions, however there is a chance you could accidentally poison them. You must meet a DC of 15 for regular Healing (common), 20 for Greater Healing (uncommon), 25 for Superior Healing (rare), or 30 for Supreme Healing (very rare). If you fail to meet the DC for your craft, the DM will roll a d20 in secret. If the d20 roll is lower (tie goes to the crafter) than the difference of your crafting roll and the DC, you accidentally poison the potion with a poison of equal rarity. You can never gain advantage by any means when making Potions of Healing.
Suggested Characteristics
Poisoners have little respect for an honorable fight. They may poison their weapons, food, drink, or even an object's surface to gain an advantage over their opponent. They may be unable to resist the urge to slip something into the food or drink of someone they dislike when their target is distracted. They may enjoy testing their creations on animals, or if they are mad they may test them on themselves. Overall, there are very few people who become poisoners with good intentions or strong moral boundaries. This does not mean they are beyond doing good deeds, just that a good deed is rarely their primary goal.
