Whether you grew up in the lawless shores of Port Celes' districts, spent your time pilfering loose coin from the pockets of the less-attentive inventors throughout the Torand Federation, or have been entangled with mercenary work for a while, your lifestyle of doing what's neccesary to survive eventually drew the attention of the Mangara Mob: the most organized criminal organization in Thelas, a syndicate with a thorough code of honor and a real sense of community amongst each other. Offering protection, real kinship, and a number of useful resources to further develop your craft as someone trying to survive, you agree to join the ranks of the Children of the Moon...as long as you don't do anything absolutely despicable like slavery or kids. They are the order that sprung from the ruthless chaos of the world, there are lines the Mangara don't cross.
- Skill Proficiencies: Choose two from Sleight of Hand, Stealth, Deception and Intimidation
- Tool Proficiencies: One type of gaming set, thieves’ tools
- Equipment: A crowbar, a a dark three piece suit, a symbol of the Mangara, and a pouch containing 15 gp
You have gained enough clout within the Mangara that you can call in a favor from your contacts, should you be close enough to a center of Mangara activity. A request for a favor can be no longer than 20 words, and is passed up the chain to an undisclosed Lieutenant for approval. This favor can take a shape up to the DM’s discretion depending on the request, with varying speeds of fulfillment: If muscle is requested, an NPC Mangara minion can temporarily aid the party. If money is needed, a small loan can be provided. If you’ve been imprisoned, they can look into breaking you free, or paying off the jailer.
The turn comes when a favor is asked to be repaid. The favor debt can be called in without warning, and many times with intended immediacy. Perhaps the player is called to commit a specific burglary without the option to decline. Maybe they must press a dignitary for a specific secret at an upcoming ball. The Mangara could even request a hit on an NPC, no questions asked or answered. The DM is to provide a debt call proportionate to the favor fulfilled. If a favor is not repaid within a reasonable period of time, membership to the Mangara can be revoked, and if the debt is large enough, the player may become the next hit contract to make the rounds.
Additionally, you gain one cantrip of your choice amongst Thaumaturgy, Message, or Minor Illusion. Your spellcasting ability is chosen appropiately by the DM.
Suggested Characteristics
Mangara members might seem like villains on the surface, and many of them are villainous to the core. But lots of them have an abundance of endearing, if not redeeming, characteristics. They have a real sense of honor and ethics in their work, they respect each other and don't stab their fellow members on the back, and they find a real kinship for each other's company, even if there is disregarding for the actual laws and ethics of the land.
