As a Censure, your duty is silent, inglorious, and pivotal. Senior Censures take it as a point of professional pride to be totally unheard of, with their accomplishments known only to the Mothers.
In past ages, a chain-witch would have been assigned to oversee any blasphemous studies, keeping a watchful eye for disruptive clauses or thought contagion. Memory ensorcelling created a safety net for covenant-priests and arcane prosecutors, who emerged from their studies whole and undamaged, albeit so scrupulously purged that senior researchers often believed it was their first day at work. The cataclysm and fall of the Cathedral of Chains made it clear that these safeguards were not sufficient. Today, with memory modification outlawed and Chain witches in short supply, Censures must rely on training, quick wits, and nerve when handling their Blasphemers. A Censure has unequivocal authority over any eldritch study performed in their assigned domain, and must be prepared at all times to uphold protocol, including, if necessary, the use of force. Their responsibilities may include the "broad redaction" of their Blasphemer, either in correction of error, or to cauterize thought contagion, but more often, Censures serve as priest, keeper, and advisor to their charges. The mission of every Blasphemer is paramount, and their Censure will permit no harm to come to them, nor impediment to their craft, beyond the strictures of their covenant.
Priests across the ages have been asked, "Reverend, when we pray, is anyone really listening?" Censures are unique among clergy when they answer: not because their answer is unorthodox, but because they give it in a whisper.
Discuss your responsibilities with your Dungeon Master. What domain of arcane inquiry are you responsible for safely furthering? What relationships have you had with your Blasphemers, then and now? What have you silenced that was not heresy, and why must you keep it secret?
- Skill Proficiencies: Intimidation, History, Religion, Insight
- Languages: Abyssal, Deep Speech, Infernal
Your training as a Censure has made you uniquely sensitive to psychic threats, unseen forces, and heretical patterns. When you succeed on an Insight or Arcana check, you can identify the influence of the Abyss, or other forces, depending on your temperament and speciality. If you are present with your Blasphemer, you may scrutinize their interactions to learn the magnitude of any threat posed by the object of your inquiry.
