You once held power and privilege, now you hold nothing but the memory of different times. You were once a good and noble figure, now you've become something far more sinister. In years past, you could have been a member of a knightly order or noble who went too far. Perhaps your disregard for the lives of others or willingness to delve down dark paths lead you to social ruin. No matter what you did, people fear you. This fear could be born of terrible deeds, feats of depravity, or battles against the forces of good that would cause most commoners to shake at the mention of your name.
Despite your title as a "Dark Knight", you do not have to be an evil person. All you have to be is feared. Perhaps this fear is born from rumors that stretch the truth about you or true intentions? Maybe you did commit acts against a country, but perhaps the country were the evil ones? Or maybe you did truly burn down an orphanage because you were curious about how they'd taste?
Discuss with your DM about how you became the way you are. Did you come from nothing? Or did you come from nobility? Were you originally a member of a powerful order of knights? How did you become feared? Did you destroy your order? Or did you show up and start destroying things one day? Have you always been the good guy, but gotten a bad rep because of a secret plot? Or did you decide that if people wanted a monster, then you'd give them one?
