Fearful, subservient and insignificant; you were nothing more than a form of amusement, or at best a pet, for a despotic and ruthless Beholder; your life entirely dependant on your aberrant masters whims. Each day you feared would be your last, as your master's paranoia would wax and wane; you would watch on, as your fellow slaves would suffer the consequences. Reduced to ash, drained of life, devoured alive, crushed against the lairs surroundings, or forever petrified in stone; their horrific death throes preserved for all eternity.
You did all that you could to survive, to merely see through another day. Perhaps you pandered to your master's narcissism or performed ever elaborate acts, or the fool, for your master's amusement; you could have even proved yourself worthy enough to serve as a beneficial pawn. Nevertheless, this requisite servitude would lead to the development of a very specific mindset. Perhaps you're an incredible coward and opportunist, doing all you can to ensure your survival above all else. Perhaps you've developed an extremely cold and logical demeanour, refusing to adopt emotion, dreams or goals; less it be exploited or tainted. Most rarely, it may have even forged within you an unbreakable and fierce spirit, your futile resistance and hostility serving as the greatest entertainment for your merciless master.
How have you now found yourself free of your master's clutches? What are your plans now that you have free reign of the world? Or could it be, that you may not be as free as you appear?
Were you rescued by a roaming adventurer band? Did you plot a grand escape with your fellow slaves, only to be left alone as the sole survivor? Or are you very much under the sway of your current master, your guise of freedom, merely temporary, in order to further your master's fiendish goals?
- Skill Proficiencies: Persuasion, Performance, Insight
- Equipment: a token to remember your parents by, a set of common clothes, a pouch containing 10 gp, a relic or treasure taken from the beholders lair
Having spent so much time sequestered in your Master's lair/territory, you are aware of the generic patterns, development and arrangement of the lair's of beholder-kin. This provides you with advantages when attempting to locate the lair of a beholder, to identify traps set by beholders or their slaves/thralls, as well as to identify hidden passages or spaces present within a beholders lair.
Furthermore, due to your familiarity with Beholder-kin you are considered knowledgeable in both its mannerisms and inherent defences. By observing a beholder-kin for a minute or more, through either magical or non-magical means. You are able to ascertain its damage vulnerabilities, damage resistances, damage immunities and condition immunities as well as any specific defining characteristics which may differentiate it from other beholder-kin.
Suggested Characteristics
Beholder slaves/thralls are shaped by their trauma and horrific experience. Perhaps they are unable to return to general human life their minds almost shattered beyond repair. Their fear could be almost impossible to mask, and be apparent in every action they make? Some become cruel and despotic themselves, to best protect their fragility; or merely as their life has proven that those who are cruel- succeed. You may have even triumphed over your trauma, and emerged from your servitude redeemed and benevolent, implementing within you either a strong desire to punish evil or uplift the downtrodden, and possibly both.
