You're not in Kansas anymore. You're from the far off future and somehow got sent to the past due to means outside of your own. You're stuck in a world that isn't your own, and you have to adapt to your new home, or else die a bloody and brutal death.

DM's Notes: Modern Technology
Given that you're from the present, it's implied that you have at least one object from modern day, other than the clothes on your back. This will have to be discussed with your DM. Talk about what items your character has, and how civilians of this world would react to them. If your character has a weapon unique to the modern world, talk about how much damage it would do and what damage types it would have. If your character has a firearm, this can be converted to the D&D world rather easily. Check page 267 of the Dungeon Master's Guide for reference.

DM's Notes: PLOT TWIST!
What if this isn't the past? What if, instead of being sent to the past, you were instead sent to a post-apocalyptic future, or an alternate dimension? If this really is the past, what happened to all the magic and monsters? You, as the DM, should leave little clues for your time traveling friend that things aren't what they seem to be that leave both them and the party asking questions. And then, just at the right moment, BAM! Hit them with the answer to all their questions, and flip their whole world upside down.

Skill Proficiencies: Investigation and one other skill of your choice that isn't Arcana

Origin

No one is just sent through space and time for no reason. You have to consider how and why you're suddenly in medieval times. You were unlucky enough to be put in a situation that sent you back in time. Choose one of the following backstories, or roll on the table below to decide how you ended up here.

d10 Origin
1 I got run over by a semi truck. Next thing I knew, I woke up here.
2 I was sent back in time to prevent a robot uprising from starting. It appears there was a glitch in the system and I was sent too far back into the past. Or, was I?
3 I was in a cabin in the woods with my best friends. We found a magic book that summoned a horde of demons and opened a portal through time. I am the sole survivor.
4 I was an astronaut that was awakened from a deep hibernation after a near-light-speed space voyage with my friends. We crash landed on this planet that looks a lot like Earth. We got separated in an alien attack, but I must continue my voyage for discovery!
5 I've spent years, decades of my life trying to invent my time machine, and after so many years it finally works! It's broken now, but it finally works!
6 I found a hot tub time machine while blackout drunk.
7 I was a soldier on forign soil. My crew and I found these strange rocks in a formation that sent us back in time. We got ambushed by these things that tore through my squad like nothing! I'm the only one who survived.
8 I was offered $500 by this weird scientist to participate in his little experiment. I think it works.
9 I was sitting there alone, enjoying my day, when all of the sudden this old wizard summoned me into this place.
10 I touched the shiny floating rock and was zapped here. After that, I didn't poop for a week.

Feature: I Understand that Reference

You're now in a world where fantasy is reality, and all those tropes in games, movies, and TV shows are just day-to-day life. You can use your knowledge of pop culture to improvise your way through various situations. Your DM might draw the line on certain situations that could potentially involve metagaming. However, if your character plays D&D, then their knowledge about the D&D world should be limited to what you as a player know off the top of your head.

Suggested Characteristics

An outsider in every sense of the word, unwilling time travelers stand out amongst the crowd in every way possible. They talk differently, they dress differently, they talk about things that don't exist (yet). When tossed into the world of fantasy, they commonly plan on doing one of two things: Find a way to get back home, or stay here and start a new life.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I tend to geek out over things most people here would see as mundane.
2 I make a lot of references that literally no one understands.
3 I try to hide the fact that I'm not from here.
4 I try to sound wise by emulating a fantasy character I like.
5 I might be stuck in the past, but I'm still me.
6 All those years of both high school and college, wasted!
7 Does anyone know where I can get good cell service?
8 It feels like this world is a part of some sort of tabletop game that I've played before. I just can't remember what it is...
d6 Ideal
1 Return. I have to get back to the future! (Any)
2 Curiosity. If I was sent to the past, what would happen if I was to do something... unusual? (Chaotic)
3 Experience. Well, I'm stuck in Wonderland. Might as well make the most of it. (Any)
4 Fantasy. I can finally live out my D&D campaign in real life! (Any)
5 Glory. I was a nobody back home. Now, I can finally be somebody! (Any)
6 Mystery. If this is the past, what happened to all the magic and monsters? (Any)
d6 Bond
1 The idea of one day going back home to my family and friends keeps me moving on.
2 I can finally be the knight in shining armor that saves the princess from the dragon!
3 This is my chance to start my life over. Hopefully I don't screw it up.
4 If I'm going to live here, I can't do it alone. I need friends who can guide me through this bizarre world.
5 I can use my knowledge of the future to help the people of today.
6 I have so many questions, and I WILL get answers!
d6 Flaw
1 I have no idea what's going on.
2 My manorisms and attire make me stand out like a sore thumb.
3 I just wanna go home!
4 I've seen these situations a million times in games and movies. This should be no different, right? Right? Right?
5 I miss the wonders of modern day. Like the internet. And air conditioning. And Bomb Pops.
6 I tend to get lost in thought when I think about the situations that led me here. And, when that happens, I tend to think of my family, and why I deserve any of this, which causes me to enter an existential crisis- AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH WHAT IS LIFE?!?!?!
