You were born or raised within an Elven Enclave, deep within the forests of Tristoania.
Life within the Enclave
Compared to human culture, life within an Elven Enclave is slow. Families are more nebulous as marriage is a very rare thing within Elven society and polyamory is common. It is likely your character was raised by a group or pod of Elves called a Bruidche. Education within an Elven Enclave is left to these Bruidche and is usually very through, over a long period of time. It isn't expected for Elves to be able to read, write or even speak fluently till they are ten years old, which is when they will celebrate their first birthday. After that they will spend the next ten years learning about the forest they live in as well as everyday in and out of home tasks. After those ten years they are expected to pick their first aptitude and secure and apprenticeship. After learning their first aptitude to a level acceptable of their teacher they are considered adults.
Leaving the Enclave
Although rare, some Elves choose to leave the Enclave. Sometimes this could be forced exile, where as others might want to explore and find out what the world is like outside the Enclave. It is far more common for Non-Elves to leave the Enclave however, seeking a life more attuned with their lifespan.
When someone leaves the Enclave they are leaving with the expectation that they might not be allowed to return. Everyone that leaves is marked with a tattoo of magical ink, marking them as an outcast and wanderer. Although the Enclave may still choose to aid a marked individual they will not be able to again live within the Enclave until this mark is removed. Removing a mark requires three Elves that are senior in the Enclave to agree, touching the mark and giving permission for them to return to the Enclave.
