Hero's Prodigy Image

You met a great hero at one point in your life, this hero might have saved you, adopted you or maybe they even birthed you. You have sense then trained under them, learning their skills and abilities and they have become a strong influence in your life, although that relationship might not be entirely positive, your hero might be overly controlling of you and your actions, trying to hold on to the spotlight through your actions or manipulating you into finishing some business on the hero's behalf. Or on the other side you and your hero can be the best of friends, close as kin and maybe just mentor and student, in this case your hero cares greatly for you and wishes to see your potential fulfilled and for you to make your own mark on the world. Whatever the relationship is you have now been set free into the world to put all you've learned into practice, what you use those skills for is in your hands now, will you use them to uphold your hero's legacy? Or disgrace it? Or will you attempt to step out of their shadow and carve out a legend for yourself? (This is a good background if you wish to tie a new PC an older one. Perhaps one from a previous campaign. Or you and the DM can make up the hero of villain that trained your character. You and your Hero are most likely the same class although they are a much higher level and have a variety of proficiencies and skills of their own, when picking this background be sure to focus on your PC and the Hero's relationship.)

Skill Proficiencies: When picking this background, choose two skills and a tool that your hero is proficient in, you gain proficiency in those skills and tool.
Equipment: If your hero is a holy caster, you gain their first holy symbol. If your hero is an arcane magic caster, you gain a spell focus they personally enchanted or a component pouch from their privet stock. If your hero is a martial warrior or rogue, you gain a customized weapon designed especially for you. Additionally, you gain 4 rations, the key to your hero's home, a set of common or fancy clothes, a pouch containing your final allowance of 20 gp.

Feature: Fame by Proxy

You may coast on your hero's fame or infamy when interacting with people and creatures within the hero's sphere of influence, name dropping your hero and making it known you're their prime disciple might get you a thing or two depending on their disposition towards your hero. you might get free room and board, a high five or a slight discount at a store if their disposition towards the hero is a good one, on the other hand you might earn animosity or even fear if the hero is particularly infamous among others. For example a great paladin hero might generate great reverence in the towns or villages they protected, but make you a target in the eyes of villains they stopped in doing so.Just keep in mind that if your your hero is good they might not like you using their name to intimidate others to get your way, or maybe they do.

Suggested Characteristics

Your hero has a great deal of influence over you and your values, if your hero was aligned with goodness and lawfulness its likely that you are as well, same thing if they were evil and liked to sow chaos. Or you might be a rebel, striking out against their values out of spite or a hunger for independence. But their lessons are something that will stick with you throughout your adventures, for better or worse.

Variant Feature: Grey Knight

The actions of your hero might be more colorful then what some legends will let you to believe, in their life there has been no clear line in the sand dividing whats good and whats evil, your hero knows this and has walked that line many times. They may have hurt many people to save many more, or those they care about the most, or just themselves. They may be a great hero to one group of people and a terrible villain to another. These kinds of heroes are likely quite pragmatic and knows that only with your own skills and knowledge will see you through this harsh reality, so they double down on your training, perhaps hoping that you can do better then them. If you spend downtime training with your hero to gain proficiency in one of their skills or tools, you need only spend half the gold cost to learn their skill or tool proficiency.
