Outrider, scout, vanguard, skirmisher; your profession is known by many names, but the job is always the same. You conduct mounted patrols in the hinterlands and along the far borders of your nation, clan's or tribe's territory. During periods of conflict, you are charged with scouting ahead of the main host. The time you have spent in the saddle has made you an accomplished scout and rider and provided you with competency in caring for your mount and riding gear. Your time as an outrider has also allowed you to learn the language of one of the border or hinterland clans.
- Skill Proficiencies: Animal Handling,Perception.
- Tool Proficiencies: One tool proficiency appropriate to your job as a scout or for the care of your mount and riding tack, such as Cartographer's tools, Navigator's tools. Leatherworking tools, Smith's tools, or Tinker's tools.
- Languages: One language used by a group from your faction's borders or hinterlands.
- Equipment: Sturdy riding clothes, a Saddle, military, a bit and bridle, and a pouch containing 15 gold
You are used to spending long hours in the saddle while covering vast amounts of ground and operating far from easy resupply. You and your mount can move twice the normal amount of time (up to 16 hours) each day before being subject to the effects of a forced march, additionally, your mount may gallop for up to twice the normal length of time. Your training and experience allow you to easily recall a general sense of the terrain, settlements, and arrangement of any potential enemy forces you have rode by within the past week. In addition, you can find food and fresh water for your mount, yourself and up to 2 other people each day, provided that the land offers appropriate forage.
Suggested Characteristics
Outriders are a disparate lot comprised of loners, mavericks, adventure seekers, glory hounds, patriots and protectors. Some see the tremendous importance of their duties as a sacred responsibility while others find it a burdensome yoke. Regardless, few who ride for long are unaffected by the vocation.
