Anybody can be murder someone. Assassins are a dime a dozen. But you have become something entirely different. You are a gentle breeze on the curtains, a whisper not quite heard, a faint flicker in the corner of an eye...you are a ghost that walks among men. An assassin may kill a target, but a ghost was never there and knowledge of your target's murder is possessed by only you and, if coins are exchanged, the one who hired you. You specialize in carrying out your tasks as nothing more than a shadow.
As a skilled hunter, knowing the board on which you will play is key. When given the time to study and plan, you are able to make the most of your environment and the people in it. This may mean learning guard patrol patterns and shift swaps or remembering the loose bricks in the pavement that can be dislodged to make pursuit more difficult. Perhaps a lover's tryst can be exposed to create a show to distract a crowded hall or the messenger bird the general is waiting for happens to carry the "wrong" message. Once you have mapped and studied any location and it's people sufficiently, you are even less likely to be detected as you weave in and out of people and buildings alike.

There are many kinds of criminals, con men, and charlatans, and within a thieves’ guild or similar criminal organization, individual members have particular specialties. Those who operate outside of such organizations have strong preferences for certain kinds of activities over others. Choose the role you played in your time as a ghost, or roll on the table below.

You have a reliable and trustworthy contact who acts as your liaison to a network of other people of note. You know how to get messages to and from your contact, even over great distances; specifically, you know the local messengers, corrupt caravan masters, and seedy sailors who can deliver messages for you.
Suggested Characteristics
Ghosts are as invisible during the day as they are at night and neither their friends nor family may ever even suspect they are anything more than a simple merchant or street performer. Those who walk this path generally seem jovial, good natured, and easy going. People may find them fast friends and as ordinary as a blacksmith or a baker. But under all of that, genuine though it may be, a ghost is ready to go to work the moment the need arises.

Although your capabilities are not much different from those of a burglar or smuggler, you learned and practiced them in a very different context: as an espionage agent. You might have been an officially sanctioned agent of the crown, or perhaps you sold the secrets you uncovered to the highest bidder.
