You grew up in the Underdark, orphaned, and poor. You had no one to watch over you or to provide for you, so you learned to provide for yourself. You fought fiercely over food and kept a constant watch out for other desperate souls who might steal from you. You slept in caverns, nooks, crannies, or wherever you could find shelter - always on the lookout for the creatures and races within, and endured sickness without the advantage of medicine or a place to recuperate. You’ve survived and managed to retain or find your freedom, despite all odds, and did so through cunning, strength, speed, fortitude, or some combination of each.
How did you end up in the Underdark? Were you born there? Were you taken there? Did you simply get too curious and wander below, finding yourself alone and afraid? Did you escape to the surface, or are you still surviving there now? Were you enslaved by the Drow, or have you always been free? How did you escape, or what have you done to maintain your freedom?
You begin your adventuring career with enough money to live modestly but securely for at least ten days. Where did it come from?

Suggested Characteristics
Urchins are shaped by lives of desperate poverty, for good and for ill. They tend to be driven either by a commitment to the people with whom they shared life on the street or by a burning desire to find a better life — and maybe get some payback on all the rich people who treated them badly.
