You were sold off soon after birth, taken in at a young age by nobles and forced to serve them, whatever it may be, you were originally enslaved by others for as long as you can remember. You were trapped underground or within a closed area for the entirety of a lot of your life, with a group of others or isolated on your own, forced to tend to someone or a group of someones. When you see someone similar to your master(s), your enslaved life seems to exist again before your eyes, whether in flashbacks, feelings or words. Who was your master(s), and how did you think of them? Did you know your birth family, were they forgotten from the many memories of your master(s) serving as your parent, or were your master(s) truly your only parent? Who in the slavery group were/are your friends, and how did you meet?
- Skill Proficiencies: Deception, Insight or Survival, Arcana or History.
- Tool Proficiencies: One artisan's tool/musical instrument of your choice.
- Languages: One language of your choice besides Common (If applicable, it should be the language your master(s) spoke or a fellow enslaved person spoke).
- Equipment: A small personal treasure (maybe an item from an enslaved friend, who you befriended, but they disappeared later and you don't know where they are but hope to find them) and a small pouch containing 5gp.
The table below will help you decide how you were enslaved (1 - 6), who your master was (7 - 12), and how you escaped (13 - 18).
| d19 | Enslavery Information |
|---|---|
| 1 | I was sold off soon after birth by my parents' friends. I ended up serving my master(s) as a slave to make their house spotless and to take care of my master(s) whenever they were awake. |
| 2 | I was enslaved because my parents were. I was often scrubbing other things, such as the dungeon cells and the bedroom floors, or taking out garbage piled on the floor. |
| 3 | I was adopted on the streets by my master(s) and learned how to become a maid. I thought that life was fun, but now... |
| 4 | My town was raided by my master(s) and took many of us prisoner, while some were killed. I never knew my parents because they were a part of the many killed. |
| 5 | My master(s) threatened my family to give me into slavery or I would be killed. They loved me dearly, and sorrowfully complied. |
| 6 | My master(s) threatened my friend(s) in some way unless I became their slave, which I did. I often lived alone and never really talked to anyone. |
| 7 | My master(s) were "high-classed" yet spoiled nobles. |
| 8 | My master(s) were many different people, as multiple people took control of me in my time of enslavement. |
| 9 | My master(s) were criminal underlords. |
| 10 | My master(s) were pirates or something similar. |
| 11 | My master(s) were people who raided other villages. This gave me a lot of friends, even though my main job was to clean one of their villages every day. |
| 12 | My master(s) were wealthy merchants. I often had to clean their stalls out on my own. |
| 13 | A friend found me in my sleeping cell one night and helped me escape. |
| 14 | I had been digging a hole out of a dirt spot in my sleeping cell when I should have been sleeping. I always covered it up with covers the guards gave me, since I didn't need them. I finally found freedom when the hole broke into daylight. I helped other slaves escape, though I don't know if they were found or not. |
| 15 | My master died one day, and the guards freed us all. I had never thought I would ever taste sunlight. |
| 16 | I and the other slaves were secretly planning a rebellion against the guards. When the rebellion finally started it's fight, we won, and I finally won my freedom after years of waiting. |
| 17 | My master(s) left the house unattended one day which is why I and the other slaves escaped. |
| 18 | My friends and I were just suddenly let go one day. |
| 19 | Other (for any) |
Over the years of slavery you have now escaped, you have noticed your masters' traits seem to be similar to others of their race. You have decided to take this into advantage.
With your DM, choose one race for your backstory and for this feature. You have advantage on all History, Insight and Persuasion checks on this race.
Suggested Characteristics
While some slaves are sad and depressed because of the many years they constantly felt unable to endure, others seek revenge against their tyrant-like master(s). Some seek to find them and convince their master(s) to change their ways, others seek to kill and avenge other lost slaves their master(s) killed.
| d8 | Personality Trait |
|---|---|
| 1 | Even when I can sleep on a soft bed, I like to use the floor. Beds feel uncomfortable, my master(s) didn't really give me a bed. |
| 2 | I'm unusually obedient to authority figures, a habit I've been given over the years because disobedience would be met with harsh words or the whip or worse. |
| 3 | I wince harshly when I go outside, I was inside for so long that I hate being in the light. |
| 4 | I don't talk often, especially in front of authorities. |
| 5 | I sometimes bow in front of nobles even when I shouldn't, a thing my master(s) told me to do whenever they or anyone passes by. |
| 6 | Punishment for disobedience was often tying me to the ceiling for the rest of the day. I sometimes re-experience this in dreams... |
| 7 | I sometimes hoard precious items to myself. I'm not very used to having my own belongings. |
| 8 | I takes me a long time to actually be able to trust someone. I'm used to being unable to trust anyone but myself. |

| 6 | I have only trusted myself, no one else. |
| d6 | Flaw |
|---|---|
| 1 | I distrust any authorities, authority is what held me captive like that. |
| 2 | When someone shouts at me, I simply stop talking, because I was told I'd get in trouble if I didn't stop doing it. |
| 3 | I am not uncomfortable when others are touching me, even if I am not comfortable either. |
| 4 | The open world is scary, I never needed to fight often, I simply cleaned things. |
| 5 | I am easily distrusting of others of the same race as my master(s). |

You were found looking quite pretty or unique by your master, who took you in soon after finding you and often showed you off to others as if you were simply a jewel. You quietly believed your master was simply bragging that they had someone unique and/or pretty, but as it progressed, you found yourself barely able to hold on to that belief. You eventually ended up escaping, and end up not talking when someone compliments how pretty or unique you are because your master told you not to when someone told you that.
From years of learning to be a "piece of art," you can halt your breathing and act like a statue. You may pick this feature instead of Strange Information to be the variant "Display Slave."
You gain a reaction with the following effect; upon reaching below half of your max HP, you can temporarily halt your breathing and drop on the floor as if you have died. Enemies who see you fall on the floor "dead" must roll a DC19 Intelligence check and, upon failure of it, cannot attack you anymore until you stand back up, five minutes pass, or another enemy tells them that you are not actually dead.
