Born on a hostile planet, you escaped abouard a spacefaring vessel, and its crew let you off here.  Merely escaping your homeland was not enough.   stowed away on a spacefaring vessel and escaped your planet.  You sailed on a spacefaring vessel for years.  In that time, you have witnessed planets, species, and civilizations that world-bound adventurers could never imagine.  Your first love is the infinite open cosmos, but the time has come to try your hand at something new.

Discuss the nature of your previous space travels with your DM.  Like the mundane seas, space is home to traders, explorers, navies, pirates, and traders.  You could have come from any one of these or many more.  Was it a merchant ship, a naval vessel, a ship of discovery, or a pirate ship? How famous (or infamous) is it? Is it widely traveled? Is it still sailing, or is it missing and presumed lost with all hands?

What were your duties on board – boatswain, captain, navigator, cook, or some other position? Who were the captain and first mate? Did you leave your ship on good terms with your fellows, or on the run?

You sailed on a vessel for years, but not to the usual places. You voyage among stars and your ship is not powered by winds, but by magic. During that time, you faced down raiders, monsters, and the perlious hazards of traveling to distant crystal spheres. Life is spent also navigating the dozens of alien cultures which share (or fight over) the territory and resources of the Galaxy.

Discuss the nature of the ship you previously sailed with your Dungeon Master. Was it a merchant ship, a naval vessel, a ship of discovery, or a pirate ship? How famous (or infamous) is it? Is it widely traveled? Is it still sailing, or is it missing and presumed lost with all hands?

What were your duties on board — maintenance/repair person, captain, navigator, cook, or some other position? We're you perhaps even the mage that gave your ship power? Who were the captain and first mate? Did you leave your ship on good terms with your fellows, or on the run?

When you choose this background, work with your DM to determine which military organization you were a part of, how far through its ranks you progressed, and what kind of experiences you had during your military career. Was it a standing army, a town guard, or a village militia? Or it might have been a noble’s or merchant’s private army, or a mercenary company.

3 Infantry
4 Cavalry

Feature: Military Rank

You have a military rank from your career as a soldier. Soldiers loyal to your former military organization still recognize your authority and influence, and they defer to you if they are of a lower rank. You can invoke your rank to exert influence over other soldiers and requisition simple equipment or horses for temporary use. You can also usually gain access to friendly military encampments and fortresses where your rank is recognized.
