Once you were part of the creme de la creme -- or close enough. You rubbed shoulders with them as a courtier and some of the glitz and dignity rubbed off on you. Maybe you were someone's plus one, or perhaps you were one of the many functionaries or attendants in a lord's court. Maybe you had a slightly less illustrious position that brought you in contact with the elite.
And then you either fell from grace due to an indiscretion, or sauntered vaguely downwards from the laps of the great and the good due to boredom.
It might've been wanderlust or a desire to return to your realk roots, a thirst for adventure. But you're on the road now, making friends with all kinds of unsavory people and the working folk alike. You're plying your trade (whatever that is) and bring a little bit of the panache of the high courts to their lives. You're being positively bad, cozying up to the wrong crown and poking into places you're not supposed to be... but you make it look good.
You may retain a few contacts from your time in court, which can be an advantage for you and your companions... or not. You know how to navigate the intricacies of court life just as well as you now know how to deal with the rough and ready life of the adventurer. You know how to listen and glean unspoken truths between the lines of idle talk. You bring a sense of class and panache to your party, whether they want it or not.
- Skill Proficiencies: Your time in court and your time in the field has given you a unique perspective on people of all walks of life and you know how to talk to them like one of their own. You know how to read people, rooms and situations like books. You have proficiency in Insight and Persuasion.
- Tool Proficiencies: You've learned that sometimes you need to pick a few locks and make a few quick escapes in order to make your way through the rough and ready underworld. You have proficiency with Thieves' Tools.
- Languages: You spend your time around people and traveling, picking up their languages and manner of speech. Choose two languages.
- Equipment: Your traveling kit would be lacking without a set of traveler clothes, a set of thieves tools and a trinket of your past association with the court.
You're known as someone who rubs shoulders with all levels of society; your class, easy mannerisms and wit have a wide appeal. Among high society, you're a novelty with your tales of daring do and near-scandalous escapades, paired with impeccable manners. The common folk enjoy your willingness to "muck in", get your hands dirty and regale them with gossip of their "betters". Your ability to straddle social barriers gives you an advantage in gathering information from various circles. Your finer manners give you access to places where cruder individuals would be barred from and your down-to-earth wit puts the common folk and the underworld at ease. You may have contacts among the lesser nobles willing to grease the wheels of progress for your endeavors, and a city's underworld alike, who might be willing to help cover up an indiscretion or two or let you in on some juicy gossip. It's a tricky game of maintaining good relations with both ends and you're constantly working towards keeping a balance, though this may not always be a good thing if someone unpleasant from your past catches up to you. Work with your DM to determine what perks or problems your former position might afford you.
Suggested Characteristics
Those who've tasted the life at court and then lost it can be spiteful, bitter and resentful, desperate to claw their way back into the exclusive company of the nobles and their ilk. Or they might find it a strangely liberating feeling, experiencing new and fresh things in their life outside court. They may retain their courtly wit and finesse, or find themselves slowly easing into a more rough and ready lifestyle.
