From your experience working with very young children, you have learned to understand and effectively convey simple ideas to children whose language skills are not yet fully developed. When speaking to a child whose developing literacy skills are in a language you speak, you can understand the gist of what the child is trying to convey, even if they are not yet using standard language, and can convey to them simple (developmentally appropriate) ideas and instructions in return. You have advantage on all checks to understand a pre-literate child who is developing literacy in a language you do not speak, as many pre-literate communication strategies do not in fact depend on spoken language.
