A Gong farmer (also gongfermor, gongfermour, gong-fayer, gong-fower or gong scourer) is someone who dug up and removed human waste from septic tanks and cesspits. Both a privy and its contents were referred to as "gongs." Because the work was deemed unsanitary and off-putting to the general public, gong farmers were only permitted to work at night, earning them the nickname "nightmen." The rubbish they collected, known as night dirt, had to be hauled outside the city or town limits or dumped at designated dumps.

Cleaning up trash and dealing with it gives you a sense of the locals and what's really going on inside them. You know everything there is to know about every structure in town, and you can tell what they're attempting to get rid of. Working at night also allows you to witness the town's nightlife come and go. You observe the guards and the criminals, and you can befriend one or the other. Many gong farmers may be able to assist the town's crooks in making anything or someone vanish. You can also provide the guards with useful information. Because you are a valued member of the community, the guards will recognize you and offer you entry to various structures and locations that a regular citizen would not have access to. Even if your job pays well, the crooks will be grateful for your assistance and will compensate you handsomely. You naturally know your way around a sewer system when you go to a city that isn't the one or ones you've worked in. For example, if you desire to travel through the sewer and emerge in the privy of the local nobility, you gain advantage on an intellect check.
