The official in charge of court entertainment was the Master of the Revels. Music and plays were not just for enjoyment, but they also served as status symbols, displaying the court's culture and prestige to both foreign and domestic visitors. They were frequently spectacular and imaginative, featuring music, animal and human costumes, acrobats, and even floats. Consider reports of Phillip le Bon, Duke of Burgundy, throwing the Feast of the Pheasant in 1454, which included a gigantic pie and singers disguised as horses. Because musicians and playing troupes were often on the move, someone had to be in charge of bringing them in. It had grown into a full-time, self-contained office.

Feature: By Popular Demand
You can always find a place to perform, usually in an inn or tavern but possibly with a circus, at a theater, or even in a noble’s court. At such a place, you receive free lodging and food of a modest or comfortable standard (depending on the quality of the establishment), as long as you perform each night. In addition, your performance makes you something of a local figure. When strangers recognize you in a town where you have performed, they typically take a liking to you.
