Arcane Obsessed Image

You have been talented your entire life.  Despite every challenge your small-town life put in front of you, you surmounted it with relative ease.  Being the prodigy of your community has made life an absolute bore.  So when you came of age, you took the fastest way out, whether it was merchant caravans or military conscription, it was an escape.  You excelled in your new life as well, rising in the ranks to a position of prominence in your organization. It was then when you first saw it, the true power of arcane energy.  Immediately enamored with it, you used whatever resources or social status you had in order to gain opportunities to learn arcane secrets, and you failed.  For the first time, you tasted real failure, as time and time again you found yourself incapable of producing more than some minor cantrips.  This fueled your need for it, as you spent every free moment pouring over texts, and finding a measure of success.  Your obsession with this endeavor consumed you to the point that you let the life you have built slip, possibly going as far as to desert it altogether.  Now your path is devotion to the arcane arts, using your previous experience to get you from one study to the next.

At a young age, you discovered you possessed a predilection for the magical arts. Deciding that this talent could not be squandered on ordinary life, you left home and began to teach yourself the secrets of the arcane while surviving the best you could on the streets and alleys of a great city. The magical skill you learned from dusty old tomes in libraries made stealing that next loaf of bread just a little easier, and the languages you picked up on the bustling streets let you decipher even the most obscure scrolls. You spent years learning the lore of the multiverse. You scoured manuscripts, studied scrolls, and listened to the greatest experts on the subjects that interest you. Your efforts have made you a master's in your field of study. You do however have a strange twist on your spells. All visible spells cast by you take on an odd color (ex. Black Fire or Red Ice), which is different than normal. Non Visible spells cause your skin, hair, or eyes to change color temporarily. The alteration to the norm is determined when you acquire each spell.

Feature: The Benefits of Dedication

When you attempt to learn or recall a piece of lore, if you do not know that information, you often know where and from whom you can obtain it. Usually, this information comes from a library, scriptorium, university, or a sage or other learned person or creature. Your DM might rule that the knowledge you seek is secreted away in an almost inaccessible place, or that it simply cannot be found. Unearthing the deepest secrets of the multiverse can require an adventure or even a whole campaign. Once per long rest, as a ritual, you may use your knowledge to prepare a single spell that you have deciphered from texts, even if it is outside your class spell options.  This preparation takes two hours and it replaces one of your known spells for the duration it is prepared. At each level, you can prepare one more spell. The spell's level is half of your class level rounded up. All spells after the first level that are gained by this background do not replace your current spell slots and are extra.

In the absence of a normal education, you have learned to improvise and experiment in ways normal mages simply don't think to try. Others with an interest in the arcane arts might be willing to offer information or assistance in exchange for showing them your more unconventional methods. Additionally, your knowledge of magic gives you an edge against many other spellcasters. You can automatically identify all spells being cast in combat provided you can see the casting of the spell and the spell is of a level you can cast. If the spell is of a level you cannot cast, you can (at the dm's discretion) attempt an arcana check to identify it without using an action to do so.

Suggested Characteristics

For one who seeks to unlock the secrets of arcane power, they must forsake all else.  Giving up all that they know in order to pursue this knowledge tends to lead a person to wander from archive to catacomb, in search of undiscovered knowledge.  Therefore the Arcane Obsessed doesn't get too comfortable in any one location for too long.  Past relationships become strained and new ones become more of an assessment of usefulness as opposed to companionship.  The obsessed believe that once they find that which they seek that their life will be complete and all of the sacrifices will have been worth it.  The crux of this ideal is that most spend nearly a lifetime obtaining the prize with little life left to use it.

Arcane Obsessed are defined by their extensive studies, and their characteristics reflect this life of study. Devoted to scholarly pursuits, Arcane Obsessed values knowledge highly—sometimes in its own right, sometimes as a means toward other ideals. But they are defined not only by their study of magic, but also by their rough upbringing, and their characteristics reflect the struggles involved in this double life. Unlike someone schooled in the traditional way, an arcane prodigy likely sees knowledge as a means to an end and not an end unto itself.
