As a sheriff, you fought for justice in an unjust world. You are well acquainted with risking life and limb for others when needed and standing up for what is right. Your experience makes you familiar with the ins and outs of most illegal operations that may pop up and you can spot deception faster than most. You sometimes wonder if some criminal or murderer that you locked up will knock on your door one night or meet you coming out of a tavern one late night, but such is life for a retired sheriff.

The work of a sheriff is hard and only the best make it out alive. By being one of the lucky ones you can use this reputation to find work as a mercenary. You can find the taverns and feast halls where mercenaries abide in any area, as long as you speak the language. You can find mercenary work between adventures sufficient to maintain a comfortable lifestyle (see “Practicing a Profession” under “Downtime Activities” in chapter 8 of the Player’s Handbook).
