Because your familial connection is known at the college, so are you. Getting caught in staff only areas would easily be explained away that you are looking for your family member, and as such many staff won't question you. You also aren't expected to perform extraordinarily well, and as long as your grades are average, most people won't bother you about them. Depending on your relationship to the family member you know on staff, you might even be privy to information typically kept secret from the student population.
