Amnesiac Image

You lost your memory - you don't know what happened before a point in your life, when you woke up lost and in a place you quite never expected to be. From then on, you began to search for answers as to what happened, investigating, talking to some of the locals, and trying to recall your forgotten past.

When choosing this background, work with your DM to determine where you woke up. Were you perhaps in a dark cell several feet below the ground, or perhaps in a barren land full of dead bodies with you being the last one standing. Maybe you were left on a dark alley on the floor, heavily bruised or intoxicated. Were you alone when you woke up, or did someone find you and helped you on your feet? Or might a flock of vultures surround your body in the barren wasteland.

Feature: Flashback

At times, whenever you enter a place or area, your DM could perhaps rule that you might have been there a long time ago before you lost your memory. You might recall a bit of information on this place, what it might have been, what kind of people would have come here, what exactly were you doing at this place, and so forth. Having come towards this newfound knowledge, it would perhaps serve as a clue towards the progress of your adventure, for both you and your party. This feature is dependent on the trinket(s) you have, and losing them may sabotage any chances of recovering your memory or any progress.

Suggested Characteristics

For their own safety, amnesiacs tend to stay to themselves and are slow to trust others, though any bond with a friend over time becomes stronger and important to them. Still, they strive to gather information, lacking some compassion, intuition, or valor, often labeling them as quiet without that many words. Whether they recall their past or accept their newfound lives, their future shapes them heavily.

Variant Amnesiac: Runaway

You knew who you were and what you may have done was never true to your ideals, so you left your family, town, guild, or nation and took another identity to masquerade that terrible past. It may haunt your dreams, but this change of heart impulses you to answer a call to adventure, for self-improvement and/or freedom.
