You used to be a criminal. Was pretty good at it too. But a life of crime never pays long term. You were caught, and looking at life behind bars, or perhaps worse.
But someone decided your skills were better being put to use then left to rot in a cell. You've been given a second chance as an agent of the law. It's up to you what to do with it.
You owe one lawman your freedom or your life. Work with your DM to determine who and what your crimes were.
You have multiple criminal contacts, if you need something done under the table you know who to go to and most of them know you well enough to trust you, though their not the type to give you a discount.
But the officer that bailed you out won't like it if he finds out, and may be less inclined to help you again.
