You are not 'naturally' born. Rather your origin lies in the casting of a Wish spell. Someone somewhere used the most powerful of magics to create a person out of thin air whether you are the love interest of their dreams or the child they always wanted, or even the unlooked for creative interpretation of a greedy wish by a mischievous genie. Regardless of the exact circumstances of your creation you are here now, as full of free will and independent thought as anyone.
- Skill Proficiencies: Choose two from Arcana, Deception, Performer or Persuasion.
- Tool Proficiencies: One type of Musical Instrument.
- Languages: One of your choice (ideally the language of your 'creator'.)
- Equipment: A set of fine clothes, a memento of your creation (an empty genie's lamp, formerly magic ring without charges or now empty spell scroll) and a pouch with 15 gp.
Why you were Wished into existence:
d6 | Reason for creation |
---|---|
1 | You were created by a lonely wizard looking for a romantic companion but turned out to be far too independent in spirit. |
2 | You were created by an adventurer unthinkingly saying 'I wish...' in the presence of a magic ring. (ie. "I wish someone in this dungeon wasn't trying to kill us.") |
3 | You were created as part of Warlock's Pact in which the wisher requested their patron give them a longed for heir. |
4 | You were created by a wish made by a thief looking for an identical duplicate for the perfect distraction (and fall guy...) |
5 | You were created to be an ever loyal bodyguard for a great aristocrat but the wording of the wish left you with a mind and will of your own. |
6 | You were created as a mischievous punishment for an incautious wisher (ie. "I wish I was famous" resulted in the creation of you as an incorrigible gossip who knows all the dirtiest secrets of the wisher and tells all and sundry.) |
By definition you were created to be good at something. Even a truly malevolent Wish that twisted the desires of the wisher will have conjured a being who can accomplish that. If a king wishes for a talented musician and you are the result then even if you play an instrument the king hates you can still play it well.
Choose a Skill you are proficient in. Whenever you roll a 1 on a d20 will while making a check with that skill you may reroll the dice, though you must accept the result of the new roll.
Suggested Characteristics
A wishborn generally looks and sounds like everyone else, though many of course are unusually handsome and/or melodious. Still they often carry a trace of lingering magic related to their creation with someone conjured up by a Noble Djinn having tiny zephyrs play across their hair while the product of a Fiend's magic may smell very faintly of brimstone.
d8 | Personality Trait |
---|---|
1 | I instinctively flinch whenever I hear someone say "I wish..." |
2 | Since I was created an adult and never had a childhood I am fascinated by stories about others growing up. |
3 | Since I know the exact circumstances of my creation I tend to be cynical about philosophical or spiritual reasons why we are here. |
4 | I consider myself an expert in magic regardless of whether or not I can cast spells. |
5 | Pregnancy and childbirth make me feel uneasy. |
6 | I feel an instinctive kinship towards creations of magic - fellow wishborn, golems, even the undead. |
7 | I go out of my way to look and sound as different from my "purpose" as possible. If I was conjured to be a demure, perfectly polished girlfriend, I'll cut my hair short, swear like a sailor and wear men's clothes. |
8 | I project an aura of confidence and certainty to make up for my lack of life experience. |
d6 | Ideal |
---|---|
1 | Freedom. Whatever the circumstances of my creation I am my own person and want to live my own life (Chaotic) |
2 | Perfection. I was created to be good at something and I am determined to master it (Any.) |
3 | Empathy. I was created out of someone's selfish, short sighted desire. I must treat others better than I was treated. (Good.) |
4 | Duty. Though I have free will I was still created out of noble intentions and strive to fulfil those obligations. (Lawful) |
5 | Revenge. I was created either to be a mindless slave or as someone's idea of a cosmic joke. People will pay for that insult. (Evil) |
6 | Serenity. I have made peace with my origins and moved on, looking to the future not the past. (Neutral) |
d6 | Bond |
---|---|
1 | When adventurers slew the vile wizard who created me I gained true free will for the first time. I am eternally in their debt. |
2 | The person who accidently created me is a well meaning fool and I genuinely feel a certain protectiveness towards them. |
3 | I am endlessly fascinated my magic and driven to find out more about the arcane in the hopes I can answer the questions I have about myself. |
4 | I bond easily with others with odd starts in life. |
5 | I look and sound exactly like someone famous and I'm dreading running into the 'real' person I was based on. |
6 | I have managed to fit in more adventures (and misadventures) in a few months than many do in their whole lives. Technically I've only been alive for a short time and feel the need to make up for 'lost' years. |
d6 | Flaw |
---|---|
1 | I am secretly terrified of death because I believe have no soul and will cease to exist entirely if my physical body dies. |
2 | I go out of my way to disguise my origins, weaving an elaborate fiction about my early life and birthplace. |
3 | I sometimes wonder if I really do have free will or if I am just a glorified programmed illusion. |
4 | The person who wished me into existence is still after me and I know it is only time before they track me down. |
5 | Privately I consider myself superior to the naturally born. It took powerful magic to create me after all. |
6 | Despite my independence part of me does still miss the blissful simplicity and sense of purpose I had when I was first created. |
