Almost as ignominious a start as can be, you came to the adventuring life after an upbringing tending the land, growing crops and raising livestock. You know the cycles of the land and while perhaps you're not as versed in the social graces and formal education, you have a profound connection to the land that sustained you for a significant part of your life. While some may look down on your humble beginnings, you know that you could do without city folk and nobles far easier than they could do without you and your sort.
- Skill Proficiencies: Animal Handling, Nature
- Tool Proficiencies: Cook's Utensils, Carpenter's Tools
- Equipment: A set of common clothes, fishing tackle, a burlap sack containing 10 days' worth of rations, cook's utensils, a small hammer, some seeds from a crop you grew.
While you probably had a few different crops, your farm likely had a specific harvest that they would grow or tend.

Through years of exposure to the vagaries of nature, you've developed a keen eye for growing conditions and weather. By watching weather trends and sensing changes in the wind and clouds, you can predict what will happen in natural weather conditions up to 8 hours ahead. Additionally, you have advantage on skill checks regarding cultivated food, crops, or livestock pertaining to their growth, natural conditions, or harvest.
Suggested Characteristics
Farmers are defined by their self-sufficiency as well as the tight communities that they tend to form. The lifestyle tends to promote a "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality and this combined with the tendency to have large families often creates tight familial bonds as well as a distrust of outsiders.
| d8 | Personality Trait |
|---|---|
| 1 | I'm always checking the conditions when I go to a new place to see how well it would take a farm like mine. |
| 2 | I'm very self-conscious about looking like a yokel, making me seem shy or withdrawn |
| 3 | I tend to gawp at things that are new to me. |
| 4 | I'll never miss an opportunity to prove that I can and will work harder than anyone else. |
| 5 | If I act like a corn-fed hick, it makes people underestimate me, and that suits me just fine. |
| 6 | I'd just as soon not have to deal with people. Animals are easier to trust. |
| 7 | Life on the road is great, but I tend to get homesick easily |
| 8 | I may have grown up on a farm, but that time is behind me, and I'd just as soon leave it behind. |
| d6 | Ideal |
|---|---|
| 1 | Freedom. You handle your life, I'll handle mine, and as long as you don't stop me from doing what I want we'll get along fine. (Chaotic) |
| 2 | Altruism. If you can, you help a person out, even if that means you will have a harder time of things in the future. (Good) |
| 3 | Glory. I've had enough of digging in the mud, I'm going out to make my name and my fortune. (Any) |
| 4 | Resentment. I've spent my life being harassed by people who think they're better than me. I want to see them under my boot for a change. (Evil) |
| 5 | Consistency. The seed sprouts, goes to flower, and fruits. Try to harvest the sprout and you'll starve. Everything has its time and place, we just have to know when that is. (Lawful) |
| 6 | Exploration. I want to go out and see the world, for all that it has to offer — good and bad. (Any) |
| d6 | Bond |
|---|---|
| 1 | My family may not approve of my new life, but I'll make them proud. |
| 2 | The land I grew up on is much a part of me as any bloodline. I'll die to see it safe. |
| 3 | Given a choice, I'd be settled down with a spouse and kids right now. But I don't have that choice. |
| 4 | I need to find someone who can help cure the blight that's killing my farm. |
| 5 | My family haven't always been farmers. I need to reclaim the legacy of my ancestors. |
| 6 | I don't know what this ancient artifact I dug up on my land is, but it is calling to me to find out. |
| d6 | Flaw |
|---|---|
| 1 | I tend to be a bit too open around people I don't know. |
| 2 | I've done things my way my entire life. I'm not going to change if there's any way to avoid it. |
| 3 | I don't have time for social graces. I say what I mean and if you have a problem, you can deal with it. |
| 4 | I've only been exposed to people like myself. My only reference about people of other races tends to be ignorant stereotypes. |
| 5 | I've been raised in a strictly religious upbringing, and my beliefs can be a bit overbearing sometimes. |
| 6 | I've made it this far on my wits and skills, and I doubt that you can tell me better. |
Rather than growing crops, you tended instead to sheep, goats or llama, keeping them safe from wild creatures as they grazed and herding them home safely at night. If you wish to be a shepherd, choose the Sheepdog feature instead of the Almanac feature.
You have a sheepdog (Mastiff, PHB p. 307) which follows you from your time as a shepherd. It is not accustomed to combat and will run away from a fight unless attacked directly or cornered, but it will bark loudly and alert you to possible threats if it detects them with its keen senses. It will always return to you after combat if possible.

Posted May 13, 2021This is great! Upvoted, of course.
As I've pestered other great background writers with...is there any chance you could make this more universal, as to better fit the non-human playable races (lizardfolk, tabaxi, Orcs of Eberron, and so on and so forth)? You can of course keep your great specific notes -- but perhaps as examples, not the rule?
