Born into slavery, you have no memory of your parents or knowledge of life beyond the slave kennels and your master's domain.
Whether a field hand or a pampered house slave, your intellect and innate magical ability was noticed by your master and you attained a level of trust that gave you an opportunity to escape. Whether by killing your master, faking your own death or gaining enough knowledge, surreptitiously, that you could teleprt or enter a gate, you got away. Is your master still seeking his property's return? Did you get away clean?
But your time in chains has marked you, both physically and mentally. In addition to scars from the whip and incidental torments, you bear a brand of your master's ownership that cannot be easily removed or hidden.
- Skill Proficiencies: Arcana and the choice of one of the following. Animal Handling, Acrobatics, Deception, Insight, Investigation, Perception, Performance, Sleight of Hand, Stealth.
Either a skill that helped you survive the slave kennels, or one that helped you complete the tasks given by your overseer. Did you work in the stables, were you made to entertain your master and their guests, or were you just a kitchen drudge?
- Tool Proficiencies: One Artisan tool, vehicle or musical instrument pertaining to your duties.
- Languages: One language pertaining to your master's studies; ie Abyssal, Infernal, Elvish, Giantish (for runes), Celestial or Deep Speech.
- Equipment: Nothing but the clothes on your back.
People of good will who don't come from a slave keeping society will be willing to hide you, giving you time, food and a place to rest and recuperate. They will lie to keep you hidden from your pursuers and may well even fight to protect you and keep you from being returned to bondage.
Suggested Characteristics
d6 | Personality Trait |
---|---|
1 | I refuse to become a slave or a plaything again, and I also refuse to let others be enslaved or abused either |
2 | Slavers and slave owners are filth to be scraped off my boots, not objects of fear or respect. |
3 | Fading into the background and remaining silent until directly addressed are second nature to me. |
4 | I feel a tremendous empathy for all who suffer. |
5 | I rarely complain, no matter the situation. Nothing can compare to what I suffered at my master's hand. |
6 | I don’t take orders from anyone, and I don’t respond well to threats. Bullies are little better than slavers. |
d6 | Ideal |
---|---|
1 | Freedom. Chains are meant to be broken, as are those who would forge them. (Chaotic). |
2 | Respect. People deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. (Good). |
3 | Retribution. Slavers and slave owners deserve to feel the bite of the whip, and the burn of the brand. Before they're worked to death. (Evil) |
4 | Calculating. Dreams of vengeance and rage help nobody. Emotions shouldn't cloud our sense of what's right and true, or impair our logical thinking. (Lawful). |
5 | People. I help the people who help me, and to Hell with anyone who doesn't. (Nuetral). |
6 | Acceptance. I couldn't control what was done to me, but I won't let it hold me back from achieving my goals. (Any). |
d6 | Bond |
---|---|
1 | I feel an immense guilt for having helped my former master conduct magical experiments on other slaves. I hope to atone one day. |
2 | I owe a debt that can never be fully repaid to the person/people that helped me escape. |
3 | I can't walk away from those still in chains. When I see slaves I have to find a way to free them. Regardless of the personal cost. |
4 | My former owner is still a powerful wizard, and though he may or may not still be hunting me, one day I'm going to be the one hunting him. I will have my vengeance. |
5 | During my escape I killed my master/cast my master into an extra-planar gate/destroyed my master's home and research, and now he or his allies hunt me wherever I go. |
6 | The person who helped me escape was a Harper agent who asked for nothing in return for my freedom. Now my honour dictates that I must aid anyone wearing a Harper badge that I meet. |
d6 | Flaw |
---|---|
1 | I nurse a terrible anger at the injustices done to me, and can enter a murderous rage when threatened or stressed. |
2 | I assume the worst in people. There's no loyalty in the slave kennels. |
3 | I have little experience with intoxicants, and have trouble saying no or knowing when to stop once I start. |
4 | Years of keeping my emotions hidden have left me unable to communicate with others properly, in turn this means that I have trouble reading the emotions of others as well |
5 | I am paranoid about being recaptured or enslaved again and I'm constantly on edge; checking over my shoulder, staring suspiciously at supposed slaver agents, and setting traps when I sleep. |
6 | I never make eye contact, don't speak above a whisper and never talk unless directly addressed. Sudden noises or strong emotional displays either make me retreat or spur me to murderous violence. I prefer spending time with animals rather than people |
