Mercenary Magician Image

Where common mercenaries hire themselves out as mundane muscle, you specialize in Arcane matters. Magic is all well and good, but on its own it puts no beans on the table. When people have a problem that only magic can solve, they come to you. People tend to be intimidated by mercenaries as it is, but will give someone like you an extra wide berth until they're desperate for your help. Perhaps you are a champion of the weak, defending them from mystical threats. Then again you could be in it purely for the money, knowing that if people are in need of your special skills, they must be desperate enough to pay whatever you ask. Many mercenary magicians are members of an organization, but all bear a badge or tattoo to identify themselves.

Mercenary Magician's Guild

Choose a guild or other organization to be a member of

•The Emerald Eye - Members are easily identifiable by the green eye tattoo in the center of their foreheads. They prefer to work alone, but are sworn to cooperate with fellow members if aid is requested. They seldom stay in one place for long.

•Hyando Estel - An ancient order of Elven Bladesingers, they travel singly or in small groups, hunting monsters and other evils wherever they go. On rare occasions, their members have been known to train non-elven apprentices, but magically binding oaths of secrecy have traditionally been required. Their name is High Elvish for "Blades of Hope". Members typically wear a brooch or pin of a silver longsword.

•Crimson Reprisal - Originally founded as the personal shock troops of a mighty red Dragon, Crimson Reprisal turned to mercenary work when their master was slain by a rival. Centuries later, they are the very definition of mercenary. They will take any job, so long as it pays well. Members wear tattoos of red Dragons - the more tattoos, the higher their standing with the guild. Fire magics are a specialty.

•Independents - Some magicians prefer to work on their own, entirely free of the restrictions of any guild. Independent mercenary magicians typically wear a badge or medallion of two crossed wands over a coin. Over the years it has become traditional to signify one's power or ability by which coin is used for the emblem, though it is not uncommon for magicians with overly inflated self confidence to decorate themselves with gold or even platinum coin emblems when their skills are only worth copper. Freedom from guild restrictions comes at the cost of customer confidence.

Feature: Intimidating Presence

Everywhere you go, you are recognized by the emblem you wear as a mercenary magician. People are nervous around you, for you are known to face strange perils, and that is known to affect the mind. Commoners and nobility alike tend to give you a wide berth, but when they do interact with you it is usually with respect, or at least courtesy. Mercenary magicians can expect to be allowed entrance to any community where this respect has not been abused in the past. Any mercenary magician worth their salt will be somewhat known around their usual territory. Work with your DM to establish how well known and how traveled you are. In places where you are known, you can expect to find short term food and shelter reasonably priced (if not free out of gratitude), and where you are not known you can at least expect not to be cheated (out of fear).

Suggested Characteristics

The life of a mercenary magician is defined by danger, just as all mercenaries are. What sets the mercenary magician apart is the nature of the dangers they face. Monsters, curses, and interplanar invaders are as common to them as bandits and armies are to mundane mercenary forces. The things a mercenary magician encounters often leave scars on body, mind, and soul.
