Drake Rider Image

You have magically bound yourself to a drake. You have become one soul; your life-forces forever intertwined, though you may still have separate personalities. You might be a soldier for your kingdom, a power-seeking tyrant, or maybe just a lucky hero.

Skill Proficiencies: Pick two from: Animal Handling, Arcana, Athletics, Deception, History, Insight, Intimidation, and Persuasion.
Tool Proficiencies: Vehicles (air) , vehicles (land)
Languages: Draconic
Equipment:
  • An exotic saddle
  • An ornate whistle with draconic runes on it.
  • 10 rations
  • A pouch containing 20gp and a few trinkets that your drake may insist as your shared hoard

Draconic Influences

Due to the bond between you and your drake certain changes may develop in either of you. Roll a d8 on the table to see how you (or your drake) has been effected. The two of you may even have multiple influences.

d8 Draconic Influences
1 Thin scales the color of your drake grow in patches on your body.
2 Your drake takes to walking on two legs with ease.
3 The personalities you and your drake have swap between the two of you on occasion.
4 You can belch a harmless sensory effect related to your drake's breath.
5 You grow hard, claw-like nails that allow you to deal slashing damage with your unarmed strikes as your option.
6 Your drake's wings can fold seamlessly into its back.
7 Your drake's prehensile claws are particularly suited to wield weapons.
8 Either you speak in a thick draconic accent, or your drake speaks with an accent suited to one of your other non-draconic languages.

Feature: Drake Companion

As an action, you can magically summon the drake that is bound to you. It appears in an unoccupied space of your choice within 30 feet of you.

The drake is friendly to you and your companions, and it obeys your commands. See its game statistics in the accompanying Drake Companion stat block, which uses your proficiency bonus (PB) in several places. You can determine the cosmetic characteristics of the drake, such as its color, its scale texture, or any visible effect of its Draconic Essence; your choice has no effect on its game statistics.

In combat, the drake shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. If you are incapacitated, the drake can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.

The drake remains until it is reduced to 0 hit points, the drake becomes incapacitated and must make death saving throws. (A player can roll medicine and stabilize their drake by sacrificing their own vitality as an action.)

Once you summon the drake, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest, unless you blow your drake whistle. The Drake will appear in 1D100 minutes.

Suggested Characteristics

To bond to a drake is to introduce a whole new perspective into your psyche. Many drake riders undergo drastic changes in world view when bonded to a drake as they absorb its memories; some even become mere extensions of the drake. Whatever the case, pride, greed, and empathy towards dragon-kind are common among dragon-riders.
