Deranged Clergy (Acolyte Variant) Image

You spent your life in the service of a temple or order dedicated to a specific god or pantheon of gods, but the times, and you, have changed. Sometime along the way, you stopped acting as merely an intermediary between the realm of the holy and the mortal world and delved into forbidden, arcane esotery and unhinged fanaticism. You no longer serve the divine in a recognisable or typical way, if it is the divine you serve at all, and are instead engaged in occult practices that others may see as peculiar, concerning, or even blasphemous. You once performed sacred rites, but now your sacrament is sinister.

Choose a god, a pantheon of gods, some other quasi-divine being, or some other entity, and work with your DM to detail the nature of your religious 'service'. Were you a lesser functionary in a temple who delved into a dark secret within and abandoned the rites in which the priests raised you? Or were you a high priest who suddenly experienced a call to serve your god in a 'different' way? Perhaps you were the leader of a small cult outside of any established temple structure, or even an occult group that served a fiendish master that you now embrace in a way that is not even recognisable to your former peers.

Skill Proficiencies: You are proficient in either Insight or Persuasion, either Deception or Investigation, and either Religion or History.
Tool Proficiencies: You are proficient in the use of either Poisoner's Kit or Forgery Kit.
Languages: Two of your choice, one of which must be Exotic or Secret.
Equipment: A derelict holy symbol (a gift to you when you entered the priesthood; its ruin is a reminder of the manic heresy you have embraced) or a holy symbol that represents your heresy itself (and may be cursed or imbued with sinister power), a spellbook containing forbidden knowledge or a staff that focuses your dark aura, unholy vestments, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp of dubious origins.

The Fall

A Deranged Clergy originated as an Acolyte or other figure vested in mainstream faith. Some event, undertaking, or temptation has led them into a new and more fanatical, impious belief system. What event or choice saw your original faith eroded and replaced with something deranged?

d8 The Fall
1 I was an explorer searching for a holy relic, but I found something unholy instead.
2 I was an acolyte who discovered and became trapped in a catacomb beneath my temple.
3 After an intense spiritual journey mediated by Dreamlily, an esoteric truth was revealed to me.
4 I was gripped by a fever and surrendered to certain death, only for death to never come. I emerged from the experience a changed person.
5 I read from a forbidden tome in a restricted wing of an arcane library and was mesmerised by its apocryphal words.
6 In a dark corner or beneath a twisted tree, a voice whispered in my ear. The whisper never left me and soon consumed my sleeping and waking thoughts.
7 I broke the untouched plane of a ruined temple and was inundated by an ancient entity's presence.
8 I was suspected of taking part in an occult conspiracy within my order and was expelled upon charges of heresy. Was it true? Or did it drive me to the very thing of which I was accused, a self-fulfilling prophecy?

Feature: Occult Favour

The brethren of your former order look upon you as a heretic and a betrayer. Wherever you go, those who follow your former faith share your order's outrage and distrust anything you do or say. At level 1, you have disadvantage on charisma checks and saving throws against members of your former faith. At level 2, your reputation as a heretic and a threat has spread to the faithful of other faiths that hold any Good alignment; gain disadvantage on charisma rolls against any religious follower with a Good alignment. At level 3, your blasphemy has become a thorn in the side of any creature with a Good alignment; -1 modifier on charisma checks and saving throws. At level 4, your obsession has taken a toll on your stability; -2 to charisma saving throws and and -1 to all wisdom skill checks. At level 5, the heresy has begun to eat away at your body; -1 modifier to strength and constitution.

Your occult beliefs are recognised by those of your corrupt faith, however, and they venerate your authority as clergy of the heresy. Double your proficiency bonus on charisma and wisdom checks and saving throws against members of your heresy. Additionally, gain advantage on these rolls if a member of your party or an ally within 6 times your level feet is an adherent to your heresy.

Spell List

Through exposure to sinister ideals and unholy power, if you have the spellcasting or pact magic abilities, you gain access to the Deranged Clergy spell list. Normal class requirements are overridden by this feature, however, your character must be capable of spellcasting in order for the spells in this list to become available. You are still restricted to the normal number of spells your character can cast at each level. Attack modifier and advantage are negated when using a spell from this list unless your character was able to learn that spell without the Deranged Cleric background.

Suggested Characteristics

Deranged Clergy are shaped by their fall from grace, either from their own good intentions or from the rejection of religious communities. Their study of the history and tenets of their heresy and their relationships to strange and forbidden places and ideas have become manic, even perverse. They were once idealists, but have delved into a flawed pattern of thought and belief and embraced heresy. They are more flawed than whole, and their dogma is shunned by those who do not share their uncanny philosophy.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I revile a particular hero of my former faith, and constantly envy or put down that person’s deeds and example.
2 I can deceive even the fiercest enemies, manipulating them and always working to placate them.

3 Change. We must help bring about the changes the gods are constantly working in the world. (Chaotic)

4 I am inflexible in my thinking.
5 I look down upon the commoners like a wolf over sheep.
6 Once I pick a goal, I become obsessed with it to the detriment of everything else in my life.

Variant Deranged Clergy (Acolyte Variant): Predatory Clergy

Not merely unhinged, but a predator stalking the prospective faithful, you serve the shadows as a poison fang or an empty, hungry thing. You do not merely minister heresy to the masses, but have insidious ill will toward them. You have dedicated yourself to a dogma of stealing, killing, and destroying, and you use ministry to bring ruin to the vulnerable. (Chaotic alignment)

Variant Feature: Occult Predator

You gain advantage on charisma checks and saving throws against those who do not share your faith. Proficiency bonus is doubled when performing intimidation, stealth, and deception checks against members of your faith. Those who look into your eyes unconsciously detect some hint of your malice and will acquiesce to you out of fear. Gain advantage on actions against creatures that are not at full health.
