Everyone knows you, but few like you. The famous are respected; the infamous are feared. Your name is widely known for a reprehensible action or lifestyle. But at the same time, you are not wanted by the law – what you have done may be distasteful but not illegal, or perhaps you have served your time in prison. Whatever your past, people don't want to be seen around you or doing business with you.
Perhaps you killed a beloved public figure in a fully legal duel. Maybe everyone knows you committed a crime – or are still committing crimes – but it can't be proven. Perhaps you've served time for your crime and have been released, but you are still feared. Or maybe you once pursued (or still pursue) a public lifestyle that people hate, such as a tax collector for a corrupt lord.
Do you take advantage of your infamy, or are you trying to escape it?

Most folks don't want to be seen in your presence or doing business with you and may go out of their way to get rid of you or get away from you as quickly as they can without causing a disturbance. Despite the toll that the suspicion and low opinions of you can take, you find it easier than most to make deals, maintain privacy, and operate without interference. The innkeeper might suggest a cheaper place to stay or give you the private room at no extra charge, to minimize the time you spend in his establishment. A potential employer might be more willing to agree to your terms to finish your business quickly. Strangers might ignore or overlook unusual behavior or conversations to avoid drawing your attention to themselves. Commoners and even low ranking guards and officials may allow you to bully or press them more than they'd normally tolerate, so as not to upset you and earn your ire.
Suggested Characteristics
Suggested characteristics: some of those who live in infamy revel in the discomfort that their mere presence causes, and take full advantage of their fearsome reputation by bullying and intimidating for whatever benefits they can get. Others are uncomfortable with the leeway, attention, and fear they're given, traveling anonymously when they can and moving on when their identity is discovered, wishing they could just go back to being unknown.
