Deserter Image

Perhaps you were a loyal solider once and grew disillusioned; perhaps you were forced to flee after an enemy outmaneuvered you. Maybe martial life wasn't what you thought it was. Whatever the reason, you've run from the military or mercenary group you were sworn to, and now you have a price on your head.

Deserting is a serious offense; it can carry with it fines, jail times, or in extreme cases, execution. Because of this, deserters are always looking over one shoulder. They tend to fall in with folks on the wrong side of the law - the kind that don't ask where they come from or how they learned their skills. Still, each deserter is different. They often maintain the rigid air of discipline military life instilled in them. It can lead to clashes - both with those they surround themselves with, and internally.

When you choose this background, work with your DM to determine your history.  What sort of military organization were you a part of?  What rank were you?  What lead you, ultimately, to flee?

Skill Proficiencies: Athletics, Stealth
Tool Proficiencies: Vehicles (land), Vehicles (water), Vehicles (space)
Equipment: An insignia of rank, a trophy kept from your past life (a dagger, broken blade, or piece of a banner), a map of the secret entrances to one city you are familiar with, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 15 gp.

Specialty

During your time as a soldier, you had a specific role to play in your unit or army. Roll a d8 or choose from the options in the table below to determine your role:

d8 Specialty
1 Officer
2 Scout
3 Infantry
4 Cavalry
5 Healer
6 Quartermaster
7 Standard bearer
8 Support staff (cook, blacksmith, or the like)

Feature: Down Low

On the run, you had to make friends where you could.  You are acquainted with a network of smugglers who are willing to help you out of tight situations. While in a particular town, city, or other similarly sized community (DM’s discretion), you and your companions can stay for free in safe houses. Safe houses provide a poor lifestyle. While staying at a safe house, you can choose to keep your presence (and that of your companions) a secret.

Suggested Characteristics

3 I made a terrible mistake in battle that cost many lives—and I would do anything to keep that mistake secret.
4 My hatred of my enemies is blind and unreasoning.
5 When faced with a choice between my life and my friends, I'll almost always choose my life.
