Non Commissioned Officer - The Noncom Image

You didn't join the military for fame, glory, or riches...you needed a job and you're willing to work for a living.  You may have trained as a youth, studied the use of weapons and armor, learned basic survival techniques, including how to stay alive on the battlefield. Or maybe your role was more support and logistics and your life has been about supply trains or sapping.  You might have been part of a standing national army or a mercenary company, or perhaps a member of a local militia who rose to prominence during a recent war. But, you are no mere grunt.  Whether they call you Chief, Sarge, or Gunny the men under you listen...and not because of your insignia and rank.  You've been there, seen that, and lived to tell the tale and if everyone listens to you and does exactly what you order, they too will live to see another day... even that idiot First Lieutenant they saddled you with at HQ.

When you choose this background, work with your DM to determine which military organization you were a part of, how far through its ranks you progressed, and what kind of experiences you had during your military career. Was it a standing army, a town guard, or a village militia? Or it might have been a noble’s or merchant’s private army, or a mercenary company.

Skill Proficiencies: Years of cleaning up messes by the brass, and fixing mistakes by grunts have left you with a sharp eye Insight, Perception.
Tool Proficiencies: One type of gaming set and Cartographer's s Tools...because someone has to tell the Captain which way is north.
Equipment: An insignia of rank, a trophy taken from a fallen enemy (a dagger, broken blade, or piece of a banner), a set of bone dice or deck of cards, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp

Specialty

During your time as a soldier, you had a specific role to play in your unit or army. Roll a d8 or choose from the options in the table below to determine your role:

d8 Specialty
1 Drill Instructor
2 Scout
3 Infantry
4 Cavalry
5 Healer
6 Quartermaster
7 Standard bearer
8 Support staff (cook, blacksmith, or the like)

Feature: Listen up soldier!

You know how to bark orders and make grunts jump and the brass sheepishly acquiesce.  When dealing with military and para-military (guards, police, law enforcement, etc)  you get advantage on Persuasion or Intimidation as long as they understand your language.
