You tried your hand at one career and then another, but nothing seemed to work out the way you had hoped. Suddenly things began to look up, however, when you were generously offered an opportunity for entrepreneurship!
A friend tells you that they recently began working with a local guild, and that they have started making money by creating trinkets, totems, supplements, and other remedies used in "holistic" medicines. "It's so easy!" they say, "plus it's fun and hardly takes any time, but is SO profitable!" Enamored by their stories and grateful for their offer to help you out, you take them up on their offer - for a small fee, of course - and start your own little business.
You buy your base products from the guild, and then use your unique skills to craft sellable goods. You specialize in beauty products, and do your best to hawk them to everyone you meet. You just want the make the world a more beautiful place!
The tool proficiencies you choose for your character should reflect the type of product you wish to produce. Likewise, your skill proficiencies should reflect the skills needed for creating your preferred items, selling them, or whatever else seems narratively appropriate.
Even a guild as exploitative as yours has certain benefits which membership provides: you can buy your base products and resources from the guild for half price, you can lean on them for guidance if you are attempting to create something new or experimental, and it is possible that in some towns or cities a guildhall is present and acts as a useful place to meet potential patrons, allies, or hirelings.
However, you also have to pay guild dues which equal 50gp per year, they take 20% of everything you earn on the products you sell, and if you get caught with illegal goods that they may or may not have procured for you, they will not assist you with bail, bond, or even legal counsel.
