In a time long gone, years; decades; maybe even centuries in the past, you were once part of a team that protected the realm from a great many threats. You once believed that to save one's home would be the greatest feat one could achieve, and highest honor one could receive. Well you certainly did that. The final enemy you and your party fought against was the one that carved your names into history, but was also the one that sealed your fate. You are the party's last survivor and you shall never forget the sacrifice that they made, though others may have.
You never sought out glory and fame, though you certainly would have found it once upon a time. Nowadays people might not even give you a second glance, and for the first time in a while, you are just another face in the crowd. Maybe some still recognize your face, or maybe only the names you once were known by have also been lost to history. But whether they remember you or not isn't what is important, all that matters is that you saved the lives of those you swore an oath to, and the evil who stood against you was vanquished. Of that you can be certain.
Even to this day, you seek to continue your crusade against all evils and injustice, whether that be alone, or with the aid of a new team. However long it has been since your last victory and however long it will take to find the next, heroism still courses through your veins. Despite the fact that you have already attained the title of legend, you sense that your battle is not yet won, and your war against evil far from over.
Determine with your DM the extent of your legendary status as well as the length of time since your last battle, including details of your return/survival

You almost lost everything the day your last adventuring party fought its final battle. The nightmares that remind you of that day are all that you have left. Perhaps you still seek out adventures, but on a smaller scale making you a hero to a small town, or maybe you live a quiet life waiting for evil to find you again. Choose or randomly determine a defining event that marked you as a legend to your people.
