Outcast Image

You are an unwanted presence. An outcast. Maybe you committed a crime, violated a deity's sacred law, or something similar-- or just as likely framed for it-- and are being punished for it. Maybe you were unlucky enough to be born with a culturally feared feature (albinism, a strange birthmark, born under specific circumstances that are believed to result in you being "evil" or at least "dangerous") or in a place of racial stigma. Whatever the reason may be, you have been cast out of the place you call home, forcibly evicted from the life you have known, and severed from everyone you've ever known and/or loved.

Forced to live on the outskirts of society, you have developed a self-dependence and a sense of isolation due to a life of hardships. You do not trust others easily and you may even refuse offered help due to a fear of betrayal and a cynical point of view. You often find yourself an easy scapegoat for myriad local problems which potentially find you in jail for things outside of your doing.

Feature: God(s) Help the Outcast

No man's an island, and there will inevitably be people from other villages, towns, cities, even countries who know about your situation. Many will agree with your punishers and treat you with the same contempt. But you will find at least one friend wherever you go. They may be sympatric and genuinely want to help. They may be a fellow outcast and be desperate for friendship and extra defense. They may recognize your skills and want to hire you, under the table of course. Whatever the reason, you'll always have someone to watch your back.

Suggested Characteristics

Outcasts are shaped by their stigma and ordeals. Their specific experiences tend to influence their view of the world, their personality and their relations with other people, even subconsciously. Some harbor a burning hatred for those who cast them out – sometimes transferred to the whole of society – others would beg to be readmitted if they had the chance. Some become proactive rebels against the oppression they suffered, while others turn into guilt-ridden, silent victims of a shame they cannot overcome, even in front of themselves. Some give into the stigma and mistreatment and become what their oppressors saw them as, others take their situation as a teaching moment and use it to become a better person. None is unmarked by the experience, but that isn't always a bad thing. If you deserved it, it can be the chance of a new start; if you don't deserve it, then it can a sign that you need a change.
Your personality and flaws are the result of, or at least enhanced/changed by, the emotional, psychological, and other traumas you have suffered. The good news is that what did not kill you might very well have made you stronger. While you may seek revenge against those who ruined your former life, you may show particular empathy towards creatures that have suffered a similar fate to yours; you may seek redemption, justice, a friend, or just to move on with your life.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I follow my own rules: Be strong. Be vigilant. Strike first. Trust no one.
2 I'm rarely picky about where I sleep, what I eat, or what equipment I use. I've dealt with much worse. *shutters*
3 The first thing I do in a new place is note the locations of everything valuable—or where such things could be hidden.
4 You know, I'm actually really lucky when I think about it. My punishment could've been MUCH worse.
5 I am incredibly slow to trust. My own family didn't help me, why would anyone else? There's got to be a catch.
6 I hate my life, I hate my life, I HATE MY LIIIIIIFFFFFFEEEEEE!!!!
7 I don’t talk about whatever's bothering me. I’d rather not burden others with my issues.
8 I sleep with my back to a wall or tree; with everything I own wrapped in a bundle in my arms.
d6 Ideal
1 Honor. Just because I'm destitute doesn't give me the right to be a criminal. (Lawful)
2 Justice. Chains are meant to be broken, as are those who would forge them. (Chaotic)
3 Empathy. No one else should have to endure the hardships I’ve been through. (Good)
4 Revenge. The fools and/or traitors who cast me out will pay for betraying me. (Evil)
5 People. I’m loyal to my friends, the ones who care about me, and everyone else can get lost for all I care. (Neutral)
6 Redemption. I deserve my exile, and I hope to atone for my sins. (Good)
d6 Bond
1 I despise my home and wish to never see it again.
2 I will someday get revenge on the corrupt holy person who branded me a heretic.
3 I keep a memento of my past life, and I carry it with me so that I will never forget my roots, the good and the bad.
4 My truly scandalous secret got exposed and ruined my family. I need to fix this!
5 I’m guilty of a terrible crime. I hope I can redeem myself for it.
6 Someone I loved (and still loves me) is still living in my old home. I hope to see them again.
d6 Flaw
1 I am horribly, horribly awkward in social situations. That's what happens when you are lacking in social contact.
2 I have an addiction. I don't remember if it's a result of my exile or got worse because of it.
3 I am suspicious of strangers and expect the worst of them.
4 I too often hear veiled insults and threats in every word addressed to me, and I’m quick to anger.
5 I turn tail and run when things look bad.
6 I'm overly cautious with my abilities and supplies, often not using something when I need it most in fear that I will need it later.
