Stories and speculation say that Beholders can alter the physical world through dreams, but their fears, xenophobia, and overall hatred of other lifeforms give birth to horrendous creations that either serve to sate their fear, or bolster it. Beholders reproduce by dreaming about other Beholders, their subconscious mind often amplifying the normal fears of meeting ones self into a twisted hatred, making each new generation of Beholder more fear driven and hateful than the last. But sometimes, Beholders do not dream about themselves, their demise, vampirism, or death, sometimes...they dream of the Mortals they have interacted with. The other races they have come to despise, or employ. But these dreams are far from regular, and like all dreams, they have a chance of spawning new life from it. The Beholden, or sometimes, Beholder Born, manifest from the dreams of Beholders as they dream of other races they've made contact with.
These beings can manifest as different races, copying their initial abilities to a tee, but there is always something off about them. Perhaps their ears a bit too long, or maybe they're a bit disproportionate, but they all share the same overwhelming dislike for their Beholder Parent, be it hatred, or fear. They know they are born of the dreams of the Beholder, and often have a hard time grappling with the fact that they suddenly came into existence one day, fully aware and conscious. The Beholden wander the world, initially indistinguishable from whatever intended race they may borrow from, but they are always outcasted and alone. They desire to belong more than anything.
- Skill Proficiencies: Being thrust into a world where the first living being you see wants to kill you, it creates a need to survive. You have proficiency in the Survival and Insight skills.
- Tool Proficiencies: Beholden have no initial trade to go off of when first manifested. They often pick up and learn the tool of the first same race creature they meet. This has lead to them having a variety of skills. You are proficient in one type of Artisan's tools.
- Languages: Beholden have ingrained knowledge passed down via the dreams of their parent beholder, and often intrinsically know at least one language their parent knew. Choose either Deep Speech, or Undercommon
- Equipment: set of common clothes, and a belt pouch containing 5 gp.
Being attuned to the Far Realm through your Beholder parent, you have a natural sense of the Aberrant forces around you. They stand out, like a smell, a sound, or even an unsettling feeling in your gut. You can passively detect the presence of an Aberration within 100ft of you. You do not know their exact location, but can roll a perception check with advantage to determine their approximate whereabouts.
Suggested Characteristics
Although on every physical level, they are whatever race they seemed to manifest as, they have quirks and traits that tend to exaggerate those of their imitated species, Like an Orc's desire for violence, or a Gnome's hunger for ingenuity. Beholden are normally outcasts of their race, as the regular folk around them can feel their Aberrant nature in their soul. But this need to fit in also causes a violent rejection of their aberrant origin, leading to extreme paranoia in regards to any potential sign of aberrations, be it art, summoned creatures, or even potential lairs for these beings.
